I would cloud, but considering my Spanish ISP gives me about 1.8kb/s upload speed, I think I'm going to have to stick with classic old hard media.

The online backup idea is cool, but you have to trust that the system is redundant and will be around for good. These days websites and companies come and go... I think either way it's a bit of a risk. If you have 25GB+ of project files, uploading and downloading would be a pain unless you have a great connection.

I'd say get a blu-ray burner which are reasonably cheap these days, and make 2 identical backups and then give one to a trusted friend to keep. That's what me and a friend do, we trade backups so each has a recent backup of the others work. I've also thought about encrypting one and putting it in my locked PO Box or something for storage at some point. That's kind of paranoid IMO, but could prove useful.

Just curious... what brand do you guys choose for HDDs ?
Also do you monitor the temperature of your system and HDDs in particular ?

I'm asking because I had 2 HDDs that died in 15+ years, one shit Maxtor ten years ago back when I was leaving the computer on for weeks. More recently, a shit Iomega external drive which felt from the table.
And I could still save most datas in both cases.
I'm not saying bad things can't happen but that's very unlikely with good hardware.
Plus there are applications to check your HDDs health.

Seagate, Western Digital, IBM.
Maxtor is owned by Seagate now so I dunno if they have the same problems they used to, but Maxtor had a bad reputation before Seagate bought them out. They are probably just rebranded Seagate drives these days geared towards consumers.

Iomega's stuff was always kinda shit, I wouldn't trust it. I used to have many nightmares dealing with their failed ZIP technology using hardware samplers. I still use the samplers, but much less these days. Anyone who used them will remember the dreaded Click of Death.

I have an external temperature readout on my cases that shows ambient temp and hard drive temp. You can buy ones that do even more called baybusses.

Enable the "burn shield" most motherboards have in the BIOS, as well as turn on S.M.A.R.T and other hard disk protection.

It's incremental so it only uploads new or modified files, If they were to fold I'd just use another company to be honest. It's more of a failsafe in case my pc dies or gets nicked.

Yup, I'm looking into a couple now. Not a bad idea, might as well have more than 1 backup source.

250 gb of music will probably cost at least a few thousand pounds, so if you payed for every track it's
worth backing up

Anyway I use a desktop like some sort of dockingstation for my laptop. All music goes through the desktop and via network to my laptop. So everything is always backed up.

by cloud backup i didnt mean using another 'free' site i meant backing up to another pc on the web that u own ... possibly @ another location .... or even just another room

the folder synchronization can work both ways to keep the files in 2 or more folders identical

perfect for keeping your work and home files sync'd up ... but may prove very useful for musicians

if your backing up to a pc/server in your house speed / bandwidth wouldn't be an issue
