It's a distorted hissing sound that is caused by the needle digging into the groove of the record. If you scratch, you just have to deal with it.

BIG BIG UPDATE.

MY TABLES WERE SHOT! well just the tone arms. this at first simple question, has resulted in a multiple hundred dollar repair. SUCKS

but i feel sooooo much better knowing now that my tables have been looked @ by professionals, repaired, added mogawi cables. I never have to think about this again.
