but seriously, i was fairly naive when i watched irreversible, i should give it another go, even then im quite a firm believer that shock tactics in films are pretty run of the mill coverups for a lack of substance
examples being films that attempt and succeed in making commentaries on their respective subjects without having to resort to things that end up being the only thing you remember about the film.
all i remember about irreversible is extinguisher-face-smash and 9minute-uncut-anal-rape + weird stereo-panning music. think ive found my film for tonite though

all i remember about irreversible is extinguisher-face-smash and 9minute-uncut-anal-rape + weird stereo-panning music. think ive found my film for tonite thoughI'm not a fan of Irreversible, but I believe there is too much substance, it's like he's covering up a lack of enjoyment of the film just to get his point across ie extending the rape scene isn't just to shock the audience for the sake of it (example being Hostel) The reason the rape scene is drawn out is to attempt to comment on the glorification of violent acts in mainstream films, this scene bares the act open and leaves no interpretation other than to the awfulness of the crime, thus disgust for the viewer.
Now I'm not saying the director achieved this aim but rather pointing out an instance of substance in that film. For me it is subtance over style, which is just as bad
Thought Irrversible & Enter the void were both very interesting films. Dont want to say i enjoyed them but they both definitely left me thinking afterwards. I would also like to know if anyone has seen I stand alone or Carne for that matter?apmje wrote:Great film.Can't wait to see Enter the Void.
