If for example there's plenty of variation in the kicks and snares there's nothing wrong with using 1/3. But when it's just kick .... snare...., kick....snare.... it's stupidly shit.

Reso imo is one of the best at dubstep drum arangements (listen to his tunes and you'll see why) and although he uses 1/3 a lot he never seems to repeat the same drum pattern every four bars, each bar has a different drum pattern and sounds really good.

Tbh I think pretty much anything is alright once in a while. With stuff like kick on 1 snare on 3 or wobble bass or whatever, it's only when it starts to become a default and to completely dominate the scene to the exclusion of anything else that people start complaining about it or banging on about how good the alternatives are. I mean, there are great tunes with harsh stripped-down mechanical sounding beats and they make a good contrast to fuller and funkier stuff. It'd just be shit if that was all there was.
