if only acid pro properly supported fecking rexs. it just loads them as one whole file and ignores the slices. i guess its cos it has a built in break chopper but its still shite.

I'm really just starting to produce dubstep, but I asked the exact same question on this board, cause my first stab I just loaded up some breaks to get an idea for a groove and it just WAS NOT working.

I'd suggest dropping single hit snares in first just to outline the first and fifth/ninth, then you can start working with some layering up of loops if it suits, but I find loops tend to work better if you're cutting out elements rather than just inserting them and editing. For other elements making loops can really work.

I also make dnb, but ive only recently figured out how to utilise rex files etc, ive always been cutting up loops for single hits but my drums just never sounds as complex as other peoples, i can get a good 4 bar loop, but no real progression from that. I know dubstep doesnt necessarily have as much as dnb but hey, theres nothing stoppin it.


USING BREAKS IS NOT UNORIGINAL-its a fucking good method to use. Otherwise you could make arguments for not using swing quantize and shit like that

Yeah I heard something said once about loops.
That once you realize how easy it is to loop, you want to do more with the loops. Very true. It's the method more than the source that really makes the track. Anyone can loop, layer and edit, but it takes skill, a good ear, and experience to do it well.

u can also be creative by using your mind-not regurgatating homogenous drum sequences. I suppose someone has to thou.It's like its written in stone somewhere.
