US remake of Skins

Wasn't specifically referring to US remakes of British shows btw, was actually thinking of [rec] as someone else mentioned: butchered. I don't generally like television and rarely watch it (don't have a TV). Series I have enjoyed are Ideal, I'm Alan Partridge, Saxondale, and South Park.

It's mostly because at best your country comes up with decent stories and ideas but is incapable of the production value that is the US standard.

i guess it comes down to personal preference but to me shows like Lost, Fringe, and The Event look like they're made by the same people that do b-films for the ScyFy channel.

And the writing and acting is SO PAINFULLY BAD... just can't imagine expensive US tv shows as being good in any sense of the word really...

Americans are simply unable to understand other cultures

probably more to do with our general unwillingness to do so... coz why should we even bother...we've got the melting pot brahhhh best of everything.

That's kinda funny considering how massive the anime culture is in America, the fact that we have 55 million people in the USA whose primary language is not english, insert other culture related argument about the USA being the melting pot of the world.

Japan and the USA are by far the most entertainment driven cultures and oddly enough we share in a mutual fascination of each others media. Europe, if I'm making broad strokes, isn't as media driven as we are. I work in the gaming industry.... there are 25 studios in the US for every one in europe.... mainly because the people in Europe aren't focused on entertainment media. Because they aren't as oriented on it every other kid doesn't grow up wanting to design video games like they do in the US or Taiwan or Japan. Because Holywood is in the US and not the UK, they don't have douchebag film students in swarms.

Europe develops an inferior product because their society is less focused on the medium. Just like with soccer/football. The USA doesn't produce footballers in droves because it is not a focal point of our culture.

I asked if it was the assumption the media types in America were making - I have American friends/relatives and know full well that the "dumb ass American" stereotype isn't true. Wanted to be very careful with my statement to avoid this kind of misunderstanding

the majority of anime culture is dubbed bs (bleach naruto etc) the actual anime fans and fans of foreign films such as myself tend to download or buy bootleg region free dvds with subs and original language intact which you won't see in stores/tv as much.
take let the right one in for another example, original was an arthouse foreign film shown in indie theaters and we got a poor subbed version dvd release
along comes tardmo who directed cloverfield and calls it let me in and does a pretty much shot for shot remake minus some of the key elements that wouldn't get past hollywood censors and adds some more gore to a pretty damn perfect foreign film

pkay not sure what we're talking about anymore but the only relevant response i can imagine is

and that i think that filmmakers in most countries outside US & JPN tend to focus on productions that are culturally specific because it would be absurd to try and compete with hollywood on blockbusters because the largest entertainment market in world wants films that are specific to THEM. Additionally, most industrialized countries have an entertainment market that is tolerant of foreign features and subtitles whereas countries like the US, Germany, France, and the UK have markets that are much less tolerant of foreign features and subtitles..

I don't want to be presumptuous but the only Aus/NZ shows to really make it in the US recently are 'Summer Heights High' and 'Flight of the Conchords', and they're as good as we get. Chris Lilley's shows (Summer Heights High) are the only decent scripted comedies we've had in ages, everything else is absolutely dire.

summer heights high is really the show that put it over the top, but i've seen several stand up comedians who were amazing, but i couldn't remember names if you paid me.

and for nz, yeah, i guess flight of the conchords are about it, but it makes up for everything i haven't seen.
