a lot of hip-hop producers have a sound effect that they use on all their tracks. Drumma Boy has a guy saying "Listen to this track, bitch", The Runners have a guy saying "aahhhhh". I think dubstep producers should have something cool like that, it would be pretty streets ahead

Its pretty hard to hear stuff in your own work I recon. Sometimes Ill make something that, to me, is very different from what I normally do, like a breakbeat track or a hip hop track. When I play it to people they say 'I can still tell its you'. I have no idea what theyre basing that on, I know its me already because I made it. Its maybe the drum sound or the atmosphere, I dunno for sure, but to me every element either sounds a bit like kryptic minds or it fails trying to sound a bit like them, I dont hear individuality, outside the fact Ive blatantly gone to far with the pads at some stage in the tune. I guess other people hear your music for what it is and you hear your music as a failed attempt to get out whats in your head, at least thats how it seems to me.

The Downward Spiral is a fantastic album (which has Reznor's production fingerprints all over it, I mean even something recent like the Slip or Ghosts still has them all over them).
yeah, the mans a legend, he has created one of the most unique sounds i modern music I recon. If you listen to Antichrist Superstar by Marylin Manson, then anything else by him that wasnt produced by Reznor you can clearly hear the NIN at work in the way those tracks were put together.

this cracks me up...

but you can totally see where NIN is coming from with the synth and sampler loops, big 80s synthbassguitar sounds etc you can hear in their 90s industrial mess. There are more pre-nin Reznor lols to be had on youtube if you search around.

it is a very difficult thing to nail down, especially for artists who have diverse tastes and interests.

For myself I couldn't really identify anything that is consistent through every track, but;

-i usually use shakers.

-I pretty much never have any percussion playing straight on the beat the whole time.

- i usually have several percussion sounds, many only used once in a bar.

- I for the last section before a break I often carry that section to the break with a stringy kind of sound...

I doubt any of this could be used to recognise me though. the track in my sig is pretty atypical of me, but it does have a shaker :wink:

I don't really know, I just experiment with different styles. -q- And should a signature come from that then good stuff, but like Basic A I'd hate to be known as producing a certain signature sound only because it doesn't demonstrate versatility (imo?)

I guess I use the amen break way too much, but a break like the you kind of have to overuse it :6:
