I never suggest Logic for people who are first starting out because it is really damn complicated and intimidating for a beginner
I tried to start with Logic and couldn't really get the hang out of it
I switched to Ableton and have never looked back, very user friendly and loads of information and tutorials on the internets

I use FL Studio. I would recommend Ableton Live. It might be hard in the beggining, but I think that's the best choice.
In a way, I agree with all which claims that it's the producer which does the music and not the program. But I think there is no coinsidence that not many respectable artists and producers, use FL studio. the biggest producers I know is: Basshunter and Chrispy. Occasionaly deadmau5 uses FL for his loops (I've heard).

Maybe if you know what is going on or have some basis of musical production knowledge. I just know that when I first started using it I had a really tough time with it. Seemed really complicated at the time.

It's like asking Van Gogh what paintbrush did he use...
What trainers does Usain Bolt wear...
What camera did David Bailey use...
The point is, it's not about the tools you have, IT'S HOW YOU FUCKING USE THEM!

Really really really.... Ableton Live. It's versatile, straightforward as possible, very workflow efficient, has a built in tut window that explains everything you put your cursor on, and you can get it pretty cheap if you're a student.

Best and most confidence boosting advice i got on "what to produce with" is - "Its not what you use, it's how you use it", I mean spor who I don't know if anyone is into, makes the fucking maddest drum & bass, I mean proper technical madness and it sounds perfect and all he runs is FL Studio (which is considered a program for begginners and not to be taken seriously) but its just all about what works best with you. Personally I use FL, i've used it for about 6 years now and I know my way around it perfectly, I can get my ideas down fast and effectively. People are always like "oh but logic is industry standard, you can do stuff in it you can't do in FL", no mate. Theres a way to get everything you want in FL it just takes a bit of practice and finding your way around it. I've dabbled with Reason & Ableton too, both are pretty swish programs.
But seriously, take your head out of what you're USING to produce with, it sucks out the creativity within the tune if you ask me, do what you can to attain the vibe you want, don't get bogged down with technical bullshit. I mean look at Burial.

started out on reason 2.5 and stuck with it until about half way thru 4. its a really good all in one and the built in synths are a match for any vst once you get to know how to use them properly and the nnxt is still one of my favourite samplers, i hope one day propellerheads release it as a vst but i very much doubt it will happen
switched away from reason because working with samples was much too long. moved to ableton and haven't looked back since.

Hi
I'm also relatively new to producing however am picking things up pretty quick, I tried fruity loops for a couple of weeks and really wasn't floating my boat however wanted to give it a whirl cause of the price, I then tried Ableton live 8 suite and would'nt go any other direction now, I find it so easy to use, not saying I am an expert already as will take months and months to familiarise myself with every tool available however it works for me, download the free 28 day trial mate!
Have a listen to my latest production, not bad in my eyes considering its the 2nd track i've produced!

Elaborate, I'm interested.

Yes, please do... I happened to agree with most of what Etches said, despite being an avid Ableton user myself. It truly is what you MAKE, not what you USE. That being said, the question was "which program is best?" So, that is the question i tried to answer, not explain why its a bad question.

Since when was chrispy a "big" producer.
