IMO bouncing down to audio and resampling into something like kontakt or the exs24 (Logic users) really does help to get a really fat, growling reese, ofcourse also depending on using the right plugins in your channel strip.

Tip for you massive users, try this instead of using simple square-saws:
Osc1: Chrome, wavetable position turned up nearly half way, intensity around 11 o'clock, amp just over half way and detuned 12 semitones.
Osc 2: Dirty Throat, wave position about the same as osc1, intensity about 2-3 o'clock, amp nearly half way.

Also attaching the macro controls to the oscillators pitch really helps when you wanna do that dragged up note feel :)

Rapture can make nasty reeses! Then it's all about distortion (D16 devastor, Camel Crusher, Ohmicide & the waveshaper in PSP Nitro) and movement (phaser, a little bit of flanger, notch filter automation, chorus, etc).

A couple of tricks that works for me :
* I usually don't split frequencies so the 1st plug in the chain is Voxengo Elephant (limiter) to keep the level constant and because I like the way it compresses the reese, making it fatter.
* Applying disto/waveshaper first, then phaser and/or flanger, then more distortion, then the chorus
* If there's some filtering involved it comes after that and I distort the output a little to give more grit
* Also, if there's some unison and/or chorus, I insert a stereo tool to make it "more mono" (not completely tho)
