you beat me to it :D

Here's how I figure the score, in terms of progression of the origins of the sound:

Jazz - U.S.
Krautrock - Krauts
Disco - U.S.
Dub - Jamaicamon
Synth-Pop - U.K.
Techno/House - U.S.
Jungle/Hardcore - U.K.
Grime/2-Step/Garage - U.K.
Dubstep - U.K.

You can throw Hip Hop and Rock in there somewhere but they are more tangential to the evolutionary flow rather than a direct descendant. The last 3 U.K. entries can be more specifically tied London or thereabouts, correct? I know you couldn't have the very first "dubstep" tracks without "dub," but other than that I wouldn't even put it in the main list if I didn't think folks would get mad.

Having said all that, I do think dubstep will be one of the last worldwide-recognized genres to come from a specific geographic location. With millions of producers around the globe now - most having some sort of access to the internet - there's bound to be all sorts of influence crossover, resulting in simultaneous, instantaneous births of the same sound, and it will be too hard to distinguish what came from where.

I like it.

I mean, vast swaths of the population will always dismiss electronic music altogether and give up attempting to recognize its various categories (much as I've given up on rock and "alt"), but dubstep's fuckin' legit.

I'm pretty sure my History of Electronic Music professor from 10 years ago would put Dubstep in his course as a lecture today.

What in your mind is/will be the next logical progression, in terms of widely-accepted nomenclature?

(other than brostep)

He's mistaking 'shared origins' with 'direct descend'. Hip-hop grew out of fusing Jamaican soundsystem culture with funk and soul breaks in the early '70s. UK EDM grew out of fusing Jamaican soundsystem culture with funk and soul breaks in the late '80s/early '90s. Of course there's gonna be similarities. Those shuffled drums didn't come falling out of the sky, but they didn't come from hip-hop either.
