If you have $1000 to spend on monitoring you better get a sub as well.

Am also planning to spend about 1k on a set up.... just started researching and this thread is one of the first places ive come to (via the search - holy fuck there is a lot of monitor threads! does there happen to be a "go to" monitor thread at all? haha).... A lot of info to take in already...

Is a sub really necessary with speakers that have good low frequency response?

A sub is only needed when you plan on making a 2.1 mix ;)

Unless you have a big studio, no you dont need a sub.

there's a productio bible link - http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=32371

(but tbh, thats really more of a budget monitor thread. there's only 2 entry level models of the more expensive/better brands.

In general look at Focal, Dynaudio, ADAM, Genelec etc, you can't go wrong there. My personal fav is the Focal cms50 - leaving some money for room treatment, and just as good maybe better then slightly more expensive ADAM A7 and dynaudio bm5a. Genenelcs sound hyped and fatique my ears... my 2 cents
