I did a course at college that used Pro Tools as the DAW.

Absolutely hated it. I used to use Cubase and now I use Logic, but Pro Tools... it's just counter intuitive. Other DAW's you can basically port your knowledge over, buttons or menu's may be different, but going from Cubase to Logic was an easy transition. Pro Tools on the other hand made me want to punch something.

I haven't tried FL Studio, but if you think Pro Tools is going to serve you better, I would put money on you being dead wrong. Even my tutor at the time said that as a DAW, it was still catching up. For mixing and mastering though, it is the shizzle.

So if you are going to upgrade, upgrade to something that may be of additional benefit to you, not just because a mate uses it. I'm not saying it can't be done, and by all means everyone has their own workflow and way of doing things, but IMO Pro Tools is not the best for production.

while i dont think changing DAW is going to make music any easier, i do enjoy using ableton after having switched from fl. it seems like ableton is alot more open in terms of what can be done and its also nice to be able to dj on it as well. i sometimes use reason but it can be kind of a pain in the ass somtimes creativity wise. havent tried protools

Not true, I was able to automate Massive within Pro Tools. 8 I think it was. But yes, you can definitely automate within Pro Tools.

Well automations has been lacking until pt7. There was only one lane available per channel, you couldn't see multiple automations at once. You can now.

jokes aside ... do avid support updates or do u still have to buy them??? i know some daws give u neglectable discounts and ask u to buy the newer stuff... i still think its a shame companies leave buyers of previous versions behind like they did there with u... if u improve a product, the first people to thank should be your long time supporters.. (but then again i suck at modern capitalism)

so are you stuck with an old version? if yes... maybe ud need to buy the new one instead of a new daw.

as for the OP...

i can dig ur feel for change... ive been thru that.. numerous times, and for a while i kinda semi-sucked at all daws...

u may not need to switch daws... but u may benefit from a working method switch... rearrange your folders, find new plugins, buy a dual monitor setup, a new midi controler... something u didnt do yet that could help u flip the script a little...

id prolly spend numerous hours cutting new samples and tweaking new patches...

+ learning my daw inside and out... some people out there have pretty impressive fl studio game... maybe u want to look up some new methods...

Dolphin Audio have it for £479. If I was going to drop close to 500 notes on something, I'd want to be past the point of asking people on the internet whether it was a good idea or not.

at the top of any plugin there should be a button with a box or square have you. click that and a list of the plugin parameters should come up... click what you want to automate (you can choose as many as you want) and go back to your workspace and click the drop down arrow on the intrument track you want to automate and there you go

Don't be a pro tool.

A chain is only as strong as its' weakest link.

I personally champion Ableton and previously used FL (Which is an absolutely fine DAW, just comes with some inprecise stigma from uneducated people), The only reason I made the transition from FL to Live was the interface and the ease of manipulation of samples on the timeline.


Most DAWS will practically do the same thing, with different methods of achieving them, It's up to you to learn the ropes of your chosen DAW and not expect it to teach you initially.

nobody seems to large it up ever but i love the hell out of digital performer. mac-only though.

^Yeah not too many people either use or talk about DP. I'm currently using DP in a music class I am taking and I like it.
Yes, Pro Tools may be somewhat complicated but shouldn't you read into your DAW so you know what you're doing? I mean Pro Tools is like an industry standard. Most studios use Pro Tools.
