Yeah they're building songs out of just a few synths, it's not something they learned how to do though, just something they had from the get go. I can teach you how to make teh datsik bass but you're not going to lay out a datsik track with it, same is true for anyone, if you've got a personality it should come out in your music naturally, it's not something you learn, especially not as it pertains to simplicity.

And why's that? If you naturally like your music to be busy you're not going to turn out a mnml repetitive zoning tune, and you shouldn't even try. Maybe it's a matter of opinion but if you're obviously aiming for a sound that isn't natural for you, whether it's well done or not it will lack soul, and thus, be the suck.

here we go with the mysterious inexplainable soul again... i don't think people are born with a natural talent for this or that when it comes to production/composition. all it requires is genuine interest and love for a specific kind of music to be able to grasp how it works (which comes with time obviously).
yes, if you imitate and copy what you hear there's probably gonna be that lack of 'soul' you speak of, because you're writing variations on someone else's composition. but if you grasp the system, the bigger framework around it, you'll be able to do your own thing in a similar, yet not identical vein. it's comparable to just learning a few phrases in another language so you can ask where the hotel is and actually learning the language so you can write a poem that's on par with a native speakers'

All I'm saying is that if you're not naturally talented at something to the point where you have to ask how to do it, you shouldn't force it, if you DO learn it, it should be natural and gradually adapted into your style. As for what you're saying, sounds like the next level to what I was saying, not a defeating argument. Ironically condescending, that.

i was just put off because your initial post might lead newbies to believe that they'll never be as good as [insert artist here] because they lack teh magical producer genes. i actually agree with you, it's just that detail (that i'm very passionate about, hence my harsh reaction).
