Never bothered to try protools myself. I watched some videos of it and I just wasn't all that interested. I've tried Cubase, earlier versions of Sonar, Studio One, Ableton, well it's a long list but yea, none have really done it for me. Reaper was probably one of the few that I tried that I did enjoy to some extent. Particularly the ability to customize it so much. I noticed FL seems to be doing away with a lot of it's skinning ability.

i really wish i knew what you guys were on about hahaha that's the advantage of being self taught, you make the best of what you have and make sure it sounds good, like the song in my signiture, that was with FL9, tbh i think it's more the way you use it, rather than what you've got. more like the "it's not how big it is, it's how you use it that counts" shit <.< AND NO JOKES ABOUT MY SMALL PENIS >.< lol

Buuut, you wouldnt be held back at all by making it on FL, so its not even about 'how you use it', your using a standard tool...

Itd be like saying 'This size 4 philips screwdriver is better then that size 4 philips screwdriver'! ... its not.

I don't really know what the advantage is. FL9 is just as capable as any DAW on the market so you weren't handicapped in any way by using it. Now if you were making all your tracks with FL 5 then you would be at somewhat of a disadvantage. That's what we are on about.

@OP : ill add that most of the people i know that produce electronic music ARE self taught, no need to stress if ur doing things in a ''diy'' fashion... its just the way most of ur favourite artists do...

self taught can go a long way..

Same exact thing i did. Learned on FL (when i just used it as a drum machine and sometimes working on random stuff) then went onto reason to try it out and I liked the layout and concept better, then started producing Dubstep. That's the main preference when it came to both of them. Tried Cubase and didn't like it, although it sort of felt like FL, it just had an uglier layout and took more CPU. I still do use FL here and then since Reason apart from other DAWs has a way different feel to it. I still do love FL.

Oh yeah and Reason is EASY on the CPU.

i started out on fruity, moved to reason and finally am using ableton now.

i doubt i'd move away from ableton now, just too used to how things work and don't really have the patience to learn an entirely new daw. i'd love to go back to using reason as a rewired instrument in ableton, but i don't think that my current laptop could handle it

use whatever you're productive and happy with. the end product is all that matters, not how you got there. everybody has an opinion on what programs and such are "best", but what's best for you is whatever you personally work best with, without regard to "it's not as much of a proper DAW as (fill in the blank)". i mean you've got the prodigy, beastie boys and countless others making HUGE major label music on reason, which most people bitch is one of the most limited platforms out there (luke vibert is another one that comes to mind). sometimes limitations give you more interesting and inspiring parameters to work within, which can lead to better music. sometimes not. it's all about what works for you.
