I agree with Serox on this for the most part. Really the ending should be the last thing on your mind. Once you get the intro and the drops down, generally the ending will come out naturally in how you work the track up until that point. A lot of times the intro will lend insight to the outro.

If you're making tunes for djs then i suppose it's not mega important anyway, itll probs be mixed out before the end.

Seriously though, there aren't any rules, do whatever the fuck you want...

I just cut everything but the drums for 16 bars. fuck it. i'm mostly the only person who plays the track, and I'm normally mixed out way before the end anyway :p

Like they said, start losing elements. I generally drop the bass out first and treat it like a breakdown, but play around with what works for the track. Some tracks will have drums/perc roll out for a while or just a hook/melody or whatever.

Thanks for the helpful responses guys. For the other people who think the outro doesnt matter, think about how much people would hate a track, no matter what, if the track just stopped short with no ending just an abrupt stop...they would hate it pretty bad. And also the guy saying it "isn't doing it," the track IS doing it ( If the "it" refers to your ears )...it actually sounds subby, dubby, robotic, i like it...I understand that I'm not great at sound design on my 6th try, but im doing pretty good for only six tunes. and what wub said, the reason I am asking is because I come from another genre (which I still do by the way if anybody wants to buy some beats or albums ) in which it is much easier to end a track, since there are more instruments to fade to make the track still sound full without a main instrument or without many of the instruments - and because theres always the option to just "fade out"

Probably in some classical music where the song comes to some massive dramatic end

no reason why something epic cant be done in dubstep

I usually have so much delay going on I just ride that out at the end lol

imo, if u want to squeeze it down to a formula... u should apprehend it as other dance genres... like house (which, and i find amusing, could be seen as sumthing like the granddaddy of dubstep)

when u mix, as a dj, u like tracks to build up and build down (if thats even a term)... so theres something cool and very useful about breaking it down element per element...

but thats only if u apprehend ur dubstep as dance music...

u cant break it down? experiment being formulaic is so 2010..

anyways... i think arrangement should best serve the purpose/meaning of each song... yours to decide what it is for ur piece..
