As for saving up. It's really hard to know how much you spend. Depends how much you want to rough it and where you want to go. If you couchsurf and go to very cheap countries and do do many activities it would be extremely cheap (much cheaper than just existing here in the UK) and you would still have a great time.
If you want to take it up a notch (stay in hostels/guesthouses) it will cost a bit more. Also if you decide to go to a country like Australia over, say, India then it will cost a lot more (although you could decide to fund yourself when you're out there by fruit picking or something). If you decide to do a lot of activities too (and I'd suggest it since you will rarely get better opportunities and often prices) then it is again going to cost more - although book all these things when you are out there because it will cost a heck of a lot more than if you did it through a UK travel agent (plus you can be a lot more flexible then). A lot of people say that doing these extra things in moderation means they usually spend 1k a month or so on their travels.
Hope that helps.

My mate Dmitry's nickname has been DMZ for as long as I've known him (Dmitry -> Dims -> Dimz -> DMZ)
At one point during our time in Vietnam I was...
Drinking in DMZ Bar with DMZ listening to DMZ after having been in the DMZ.
(yo dawg...)

The DMZ-overdose was probably too much for him.

I really want to go and work in Amsterdam over the summer, preferrably in a hotel or something so I don't have to pay for living costs. Any one got any experience of something like this?

Can always do wwof-ing - saves on accommodation and food. Thinking of rolling with that through Europe at some point while i'm over here. And I've met some ppl who've done it NZ and thoroughly enjoyed the experience
As for cheap places, you should go to India, I think its the best place I've gone so far, expensive to fly there but everything is cheap as chips, just gotta have your wits about you so you don't get ripped off but such a fasinating place....I still dream about the currys I had there, so delicious.

Post em up please
I'm heading out to Thailand in Sept so would enjoy reading about your random adventures.
Been a tough decision to make to go there as I currently have 3 good mates travelling South America. Really want to spend a couple of months training in a Muay Thai camp and realise that if I don't do it at the start of my travels I prob never will. They assure me they will be heading out to SE Asia after SA so figure I may aswell go do my own thing for a bit then hook up a further down the line.
This will be my first time travelling alone. Anyone else done it alone? How did you find it? Any advice??
