As far as sampling/sythesis goes. I'd say it depends what style you're aiming for. Sampling others' basses I've never done and never will but resampling I have in other ways. Why sythesise what you can sample if you get the end result anyway? Just for the sake of synthesising? There's a whole lot of creativity in synthesisng I'll give you that but then there's some interesting sounds to be had from resampling also.
