Been buying vinyl exclusively for 4 years now (since I was 14) I love it.

Sometimes I feel like getting traktor so I can get new tunes for free/cheap when I want something new to mix with - but then I look at my records and have this face :D

Whos everyones vinyl ONLY dj?

Theo Parrish for me each and every!

So I just had a little look around on the online shops to see all the tunes I would buy on vinyl if I had the dollar and there's genuinely only two releases that I feel like a dick for not buying at the time that are not available now. Kryptic Minds One Of Us / Six Degrees and the One Of Us LP. Really wish I'd have actually bought them both on release :(

If record shops close I will probably stop buying vinyl - buying online is pretty shit.

Are you even bothered that you won’t have a physical collection when your older?
and so ? is there any advantage to have a physical collection ?

in 10 years people will just own a huge collection of mp3 or wav, and they will still have the same quality than when they bought it.. while most of my 15 years old vynil were fucked up and barely listenable...

i had about 400 vynil, they were taking place while i just played them 3/4 time a year, which provide me good nostalgic moment but really nothing interesting for a today dancefloor..

i kept the 50 i couldn't really sell because i had a personnal story with them, and i sold the others, i first started to rip them into mp3, finally i realize that all this tracks have no sense when turning into mp3, they where part of the vynil part of my dj life, this part is gone let's go to anything else.

i first thank i did a big mistake, i thank i'll miss them.. finally that was just the right thing to do, no more deck and plate in a 40m² appartment... twice a year i'll feel nostalgic about my old school dj mix period, but mixing these old vynils will never give me back that period... it will just make me more and more nostalgic..

life is too short to spend time looking behind us.

I'm sorry but the cost of a wav file over a record is *uckin teef blud! £3.49 for something i could delete by mistake or £5.99 for something that will stay with me forever. - especially when labels are starting to recognise this and give people the files for free with the records, from an economic point of view it makes sense to buy the records. At least if you delete your files by mistake or lose them you can rip the vinyl to play on your CD-J.

I know a fair few younger guys who have sacked off their CD-J's to buy turntables and records, which is really promising. You only have to go on twitter now and see how many DJ's are starting to complain about the CD-j's being fooked.

As someone who has experimented with every way of performing music, nothing in my opinion for me personally beats mixing two records together. I recently did a set using CD-j's, and have had a few goes on some at work recently. Def not for me, will stick with my bag of dubs.

I'm 21 and love vinyl. Every week I go down to my local shop, have a chat with the geeza in there, listen to new tunes and any promo's that they've got and then take em home and they're mind forever. It's great knowing that I'll always have all the tunes I want, unless there's some kind of catastrophic flood, and getting a new record makes me kinda excited to know that I've got something fresh to play.

However, I don't actually DJ as I've only just recently got decks and I can totally see why people would use CDJs since it's so much more convenient not having to carry all your wax around or worrying about it getting nicked but for the personal collection I think vinyl is the only way. I know I'll be buying it for as long as I've got the money!

I guess this is the point! For me back in the day it was a way of life, fashion - everyone I knew was a vinyl junkie! Thing is I dont agree with the $ thing cos jesus I only had £15 a week and I still managed it but then I guess if MP3's were about I may have gone that route as I just wanted more and more music!

Input trust me you'll never regret buying it, only regret selling it!

Drokkr mate my whole house smelt like Big Apple Records last night!

The thing with the price of vinyl is.. It's never really changed. You'd pay 4.99 to 5.99 for a fresh release back in 1997 ( I know this because i worked in a record shop then) and now most records are 5.99 to 6.99. I mean dam, the price of a loaf of bread has doubled in the past 6 years. By comparison vinyl is still excellent value for money.

*I just remembered. I remember paying 20£ plus for the first ed rush and optical album which was 5x vinyl. if i was able to put out an album on 5 pieces of vinyl now it would retail at about the same price. And thats 12 years later or something.

Be-1ne is bang on, the price of even MP3's have gone up but records stay at the same price whcih does mean they are cracking value! I would pay £6.99 for a record 8 years ago and I would still pay the same now... Work that out!

And no one has even touched on the quality issue...

I only got my first pair of 1210's in january and i just love the feel of vinyl. When comparing it to having a mess about on my mates cdj's it just feels so much better. Even when having a go on serato on someone elses 1210s although youve got more choice of tunes with the digital releases being pretty amatuer at mixing it kind of takes the fun away from learning when you can see cue points and the soundgraph of each tune

Very true bro, I moved to serato purely cos I couldnt afford to keep cutting dubs! Its deffo easier with the display but you still get to touch a record so it ticks all the boxes for me. Only tried CD's a few times but I felt so disconnected from the actual tune I just didnt liek it. Oh and the fact they cost so damn much! 2 CDJ's n your 1.5 g's deep!

Thats why you buy an external hard drive and back it up on that like I do with all the MP3's that I buy off Juno, still buy cd's of bands/producers which I think are amazing. Only own two vinyls, one being Rusko - Woo Boost and Burial's Street Halo EP.

Er, backups?

If you're sensible about it (and buy DRM-free stuff) you've got no need to lose your data just because it's digital. Certainly it's no more likely than getting your records scratched or worn out or even jacked...

i'm actually quite glad that they haven't

usually these threads end up with the same tired (and mostly uninformed) arguments that vinyl is always better sound quality than anything digital, but this thread's more about the beauty of the spirit of vinyl than anything else

god that sounded sickeningly romantic

i have 3 backup.. one on a external drive at home, one on the computer of my girlfriend and kind of a best of on my phone.

while when you get your vynil stolen you have no backup..
Plus where is the fun in browsing through a hard disc
this is the only point, it's really more fun to seek with vynil, btw on hard disc it is really harder to remember all the tracks, i have to remember the name of each tracks which is hard, while with vynil i just saw the picture and i knew which tracks it was.

the bad point with vynil is when one of your favorite is not listenable anymore because too old or striked out, and no way to find again as it was a 300 piece release 15 years ago..

As I said mate I work in IT industry, fully aware of backups but MOST people are too lazy, dont think about it until its too late. And more to the point I just dont see how owning a hard drive full of music compairs to having vinyl! I get all the reasons why we have to have it - I've been playing MP3 only sets for years now but I can tell you in that time I have deffo lost dubs, misplaced or wrongly deleted. I dont have that worry with my vinyl collection, all I have to worry about is if it gets scratched.... Whcih it wont! Oh and a house fire... But its all insured so funk it!

Bottom line is I guess I'm not into storing my music like that, I'm a vinyl junkie and I guess I'll never fully get the whole MP3 thing! This is kinda why I started the topic, one cos I fucking love vinyl n two cos I wanted to know what people thought about it!

Can you imagine in 50years time sitting with your grand kids and uttering the words..... i remember the day i downloaded that song...!

Not quiet the same as going on a mission some where to check out the local shops and seeing what gems you can find that you missed. Couple of years back one of my mates picked up Loefah's Mud 12" for 4 quid. Mint! You wont find that sat behind a computer.

Nah I get you Driller, backups is the way i guess! (note to self, go home n backup laptop lol)

And yer, getting em stolen or a fire in ya house of whatever is a worry but your point about the searching thing.... This si a BIG problem for me personally and only due to the fact over the years I've smoked so much of the good stuff that my memory is shot, tring to find tunes on my laptop is a real killer!

Init dude, thats why I have a spare pair of 1210's in my loft all new n untouched so in 50 years time I can crack em out, wire em up to my future stereo n say "Kids, its time to mother fucking feel the bass" haha!

Man I miss them days of record hunting, Tower records in Brixton was always a gem! I kinda think how the funk I had all that spare time to do it lol... Get old, get busy = Sucks!

ON THAT NOTE I'M OFF HOME TO HAVE A MIX WITH MY FRESHLY SORTED TUNES.... I might even uppload it later! I tagged J Da Flex in a pic of a limited edition ghost form 2000 I think, lol both him n El replied to say they aint even got that tune lol! Think it was Breaktasic?
