i don't really subscribe to the idea of "converting people", because it presumes that there's some master plan to divide the scene's which is complete bullshit and highly elitist. it's also a notion that's been propelled by some really stupid things said on dnb forums in regards to dubstep which hasn't done anything positive for either scene.

many people have been following dnb, garage, 2step, grime and reggae for years, and just because the press have thrown a lot of light on this music doesn't change anything. i think the biggest attraction and impact that this music has right now is that there aren't any rules or massive rockstar ego's which imo, have plagued dnb over the last 7 years.

a majority of the people involved with dubstep tend to be a bit older; mid twenties/early thirties, so you'd have to expect that there would be constant push for musical progression and a natural love for blue note era dnb.

I got my throat stomped on here about 8 months ago for not pulling out my thesaurus.

I swear that many of us who 'slip up' and use the word "convert" in descriptions are not assuming that something else need be left behind in order to convert to a lover of the sound... it's meant more from the standpoint of the NOUN - a believer.

This kind of linguistic nit-picking makes me laugh.

Too many times friends who pledge allegiance to other genres (which in itself is strange to me) say "I'm sorry, but I just don't like it". I can't be bothered explaining that they don't hear the multifaceted production or the differing angles and influences that producers of the sound are employing.

If you get it you get it and if you don't you don't.

You MAY get it some day but it's your responsibility to make the effort if you see fit. Now excuse me while I go listen to some crackin tunes.

Sorry for the thread jack Patron, but as soon as I saw the word in question I KNEW this thread was going to spin out in this direction.

No dis here everyone - just that perhaps the issue is not of CONVERSION but more one of a better choice of words to explain someone who has not heard something, hears it, likes it and begins to follow it. (oh shit, am I allowed to use the word follow???

I'm with JuJu on this whole ting.I come from a deathrock,punk,and ska(old Jamaican and 2-Tone),rocksteady,industrial,shoegaze,noise,dub/reggae,hip hop,DnB/Ragga,trip hop,and experimental background.Incorporating dubstep elements into my dubs is just as organic as the chocolate chip cookies I made myself last night!

I'd say the ting I like most about this community is that everyone here comes from such diverse backgrounds,that it makes any producer,DJ,and fan alike feel acceptance.There is an all encompassing vibe that is unpretentious and welcoming as opposed to almost all the scenes/backgrounds we come from originally.

Way to go team!

The only thing changed since i got into Dubstep, is i dont listen to as much shitty Hip Hop, i dont know if its just coinsidence, but ive suddenly realised i dont like alot of Hip Hop anymore.......Tee will be proud of me

im also a d&b head but i see my musical tastes as having been expanded rather than converted. i personally think it's all about musical perception and expectation. the main problem i see with the d&b heads is how they use the genre as a benchmark for comparison. that immediately corners them into expecting a certain sound and not being open to new ideas. naturally their conclusion of dubstep is that it's rather slow and the beats are sparse. but someone coming from a minimal background would find certain dubstep productions quite fast and overwhelming. the point is no matter what genre you are coming from it's important to keep an open mind and not hold onto any past notions.

i noticed it's a lot easier for some to do this than others, but i'm fortunate enough to have been open to and to have experienced the subtle power of space in dubstep (or whatever musical form grabs your attention)... i appreciate it for what it is without measuring it up against something else. just let go and let the genre take you to new places.

and what better time to not have any expectations than in a new bubbling genre... a lot of uncharted territory that innovative producers have yet to explore, and thats what makes dubstep so exciting for me at the moment. i just hope i'll be able to say the same 1 year from now, and not be faced with a scene full of endless permutations of the same ideas.
