nice thread, def deserves a sticky, good counter to the 'How To Sound Like Skrillex & Make Skrillex Bass' one (necessary evil as that one is)

Re: Sound Design // FM Synthesis // Foley // Field Recording
When it comes to field recording, I find that it's often incidental sounds I've recorded by accident that are the most useful. I record obvious stuff around the house (light switches, the washing machine, the inside of the freezer) looking to use it as percussion, and sometimes it's great (I got a great fingersnap sound with some nice natural reverb from a switch in my bathroom). But more often it's when I bump up the gain on barely audible sounds that I end up with some really handy one shots, like the coolant in the freezer bubbling or the tiny vibrations of the washing machine lid bouncing on its hinge.

I was interested in the sound design of Jurassic Park today, and I found this great article I thought would contribute to this thread.

Includes some samples. I had no idea a koala could sound like that haha. It seems like the guy layered recordings of different animals the same way we would layer drums. Gonna have a go with this.

Re: Sound Design // FM Synthesis // Foley // Field Recording
easy guys, i recently dived into the world of electronics, and whist researching topics, and messing with bits and bobs, i decided to open up a little voice changer toy thing i had for christmas a few years back ( http://www.play.com/Toys/Toys/4-/143483 ... d:14348309 ) just so you know what i'm on about :p.
i opened it up find its circuit, and all the gubins etc, i thought it would be a good idea to see what it sounded like as pure audio, without the rubbish speaker, so i plugged it into my interface to see what it sounded like, and basically, its nuts. i know what i've written may be a bit hazey, but, if anyones interested in what i'm doing so far, and wish for more details, i will try post pics and recordings, etc of the device. but, well, yeah thats it really. if anyone else is into this sort of stuff then reply. maybe we should have an amateur electronics thread so we can post our projects an stuffz.
anyways, over time, i will try to develop this thing into a stomp box effect.
hahah sorry for the messy post, if anyones interested reply, and if anyones done it before, give me some tips

Vanessa Theme Ament's "The Foley Grail The Art Of Performing Sound For Film Games And Animation" is a pretty entertaining and informative read, I can suggest it to anybody who is interested in Foley.

Re: Sound Design // FM Synthesis // Foley // Field Recording
Yeah, I can confirm, it'a a really good read and also covers a lot of the basics of audio.
A lot of tips on sounds, will definitely reach for it when making something.
