I would colourcode but there aren't enough different colours in FL for most of my projects.
And I'm not gonna start mixing my own colours for it. That's just fucking sad.

FL Templates, lots of them.


I have a main working template that has the following pre labelled & routed channels

2 x kick (sampler)
2 x snare (sampler)
3 x hat (sampler)
1 x open hat (sampler)
6 x perc (sampler)
6 x Slicex/FL Slicer
1 x bass (can be anything)
1 x bass (layer)
1 x 3xOsc w/ White Noise generator

On the mixer, the above channels are all already routed. In addition, I have the following mixer channels;

Kick Bus
Snare Bus
Hats Bus
Perc Bus
Slice Bus
Bass In
Bass Low
Bass Mid
Bass High
Bass Out
Bass Buss
Beats Buss
Bass & Beats Buss
White Noise w/ Filter pre-loaded

I have 3 Send channels setup with;

1 x short reverb
1 x long reverb
1 x delay

Finally, on the Master I have Voxengo Span and a copy of Edison. This is my main working template. It doesn't have any actual sounds preloaded (apart from the 3xOsc white noise generator), but is routed and setup in a way that I don't have to worry about fiddling once I've got a sound I want to build a tune around.

I also have about a dozen or so smaller templates for specific sound design roles. One, for example, is just for kick processing and has 6 sampler channels and 4 busses on the mixer to create kicks, same again template for snares etc etc. 2 templates are given over to Resampling, one fitted with 3 x Multiband compressors on different channels and another with 3 x filters on different channels, together with relevants bussing and outputs etc. Also got one that is just geared for granulizing.

All of these sound design templates come pre loaded with Edison so I capture everything I do, sound wise, and can bounce it out.

All over the place. Literally. As un-organised as shit. Probably comes accross in my tunes lol but hey ho. My desktop is almost full i'll be on my 3rd "CTRL+A MOVE INTO NEW FOLDER" thing lol
No templates. I re use drums from other tunes and maybe change them a bit but I change from batch to batch. I think it all comes down to what type of person you are and how you generally go about things.

In renoise, I always work from left to right. Drum tracks farthers to the left, basslines closer to the right, leads even more far in the right and samples and effects to the far right.

I also organize my samples and instruments like that. Drums at the top, working my way to the bottom. All separated by empty instrument slots titled 'drums', etc.

I also name all of my tracks.

That's the extend of it, though. I do it so I don't have to spend time looking for instruments or samples. Total workflow kill. Don't have a template, though. I work best when I start unorganized and when an idea starts to take shape, I'll organize. Or else it'll turn into a buzzkill.

at any given moment i've got like 6 things in production-- 1 or 2 things at mix stage, 2 or 3 being written, and something being recorded.

For me, the most important thing at any of these stages is maintaing some sort of emotive focus; if it's a deep introspective piece of music, or something upbeat and energetic, i need to get in that zone and stay there to make whatever mix/writing decisions come up. Same w/ sample organization, nothing kills the vibe if you're, say, looking for some ghost-note snares and all you can find are massive whoming electrohouse beasts.

getting distracted by what is what, is that the sub channel or the guitar... drives me fucking nuts. organization is key. If i'm mixing something, often before i've even heard the music, i'll go in and make sure everything is labeled right.

in logic you can define track colors in your autoloads and templates-- makes it easy when importing stuff.

i name all of my tracks so i know which one is which and i also try to colour code them according to song structure, and if some clips in the same part of the tune has a slightly different pattern, i'll use a different shade of the colour the rest of the clips in the structure are

very organised.

I've recently become a neat freak,reason opens DEFAULT.rsn which is my basic template of about 6 neatly arranged combinators labeled.

havn't experimented with 'blockz' yet as thats just too much.

I always label all the tracks and organize them in a similar sort of way (there's nothing worse than coming back to a track a couple of weeks later and spending 5 minutes trying to find that one track that you think needs to be eq'd differently, total vibe killer).

I made a few templates over the last 3 years but the only one I use these days just has 6 audio tracks, 6 midi tracks and a multimeter on the master.

That's actually how I coloured my channels that day. xD

I know it's deceptive because I've got PS up. :L

I am horrible unorganized most of the time. I'll usually go back and reorganize once I have quite a bit down already. When I'm starting out though, I'll have patterns and audio clips everywhere in my playlist

i color code group folders and their contents in nuendo to keep the groups visually separate, though not color coded by type or anything, i just go down the line of colors in the palette, for every new group. this helps most when rewiring a multi-channel instrument or combinator that may have sub-folders within sub-folders by the time i'm done.

i use a naming convention with new tracks that's usually just the device name truncated, with a number based on how many instances of that device i have in that composition (ie. MASV INST 2, VIR FX 1, VOX GRP 3, GUIT AUD 1, etc.). i am careful to match group folder names with their busses in asio, and any reason track names with their respective rewire channel names and device labels in reason.

that all being said, the more procedure i develop and the more engineering i learn, the less creative i seem to be becoming. irony ftw.
