Tbh, any processor from the last few years should be sufficient.

Ensure there is plenty of RAM and get a decent soundcard (or suffer the consequences lol)!

HD space is cheap on external drives, so don't be wowed by that.

Anybody who says the following:

"'X/Y' laptop/PC is unreliable."

Is really just saying one or all of the following:

"I destroyed my laptop because I didn't take care of it, I didn't use a firewall or do regular virus scans/ I downloaded garbage from unreliable websites/ Honestly, I treated it like it was just a magic box with no bottom to be filled with disturbing pornography I found on 4chan"

Sorry for the rampant generalization but in most cases it's the truth, laptops and PCs are, for the most part, as reliable as you are.

Don't blame your gear when it stops working because you load it up with jizz and cheatos.

In all seriousness....

Buying a laptop for 650 quid gives you about 2 years before it's out of date. Providing nothing else goes wrong you'll need a new battery in 3 years time so it's the least futureproof thing you will own... unless you have a Mac or worse, an iPod that isn't the classic.
Get a desktop PC 650 will buy you a beast that will still be up with the Joneses in 3 years time and will cost you 100 quid to keep nippy food the next 6-7 years.

If you haven't got specific reasons to need a laptop then don't fall prey to the 'I need it but I don't know why'. Its the look, and it's the same thing that makes a Mac fanboy such an annoying twat.

And just for the record, my main machine is a Mac. But I ran hack way before and my 3 year old £500 PC would eat my £1000 2010 iMac alive.

Macbook or a Windows Laptop that runs Intel(2.2ghz at least) with 4 gig RAM. I can't help much because I don't have the same currency as you. What is your budget in US dollar?

This is true, but i have a good desktop for music production but i live away from home through the week, so i need a (newer/better than i already have) Laptop

on my acer: battery died after less than a year, when it had only been used off the wall charger about ~3 times. i used my desktop to download everything, that didn't stop the motherboard from dying after 1.5 years. regular crashes, probably due to faulty visual memory, were frequent during the short time that it actually did work.

i have talked to 2 people personally that had this same experience with acer. i think that's the definition of a brand being unreliable: you know, having a higher percentage of faulty products than other companies.

i'm not gonna waste my time reading whatever crap you have put up but i can 100% guarantee you have no sound argument other than some loose opinion and the "you can get the same parts for much cheaper" bla bla. @OP, I have a mac, i got it from America and dodged vat so ended up spending just over £700 on a 2011 i5 macbook pro which is 1k from the uk, compared with my £600 desktop pc which went up the shitter pretty quick, as has my mums dell laptop. Also, getting a mac from ebay is a good idea IF you can get one within the one year warranty in which you can have the warranty switched to your name and you then extend it to the 3 year warranty giving you over 2 years international protection, which makes sense and is cheap.

this made me laugh, pc's don't just "go up the shitter", lots of people have had good/bad experiences with both pc and mac. i've never had one pc break on my, as i know how to look after it.

once a year i take my laptop apart and remove the layer of dust that builds up over the heat sinks/fans/vents over this time(theres a guide on the dell site on how to take it apart). my current laptop was bought in 2008, dell vostro 1500, core2duo 2.5ghz(penryn), 4gb ram, geforce 8600m gt, 320gb hdd. i paid £700 back then, i'd say thats a good deal for 3 years constant(and i mean constant) usage. i leave it switched on overnight regularly, i download tons of stuff, take it everywhere i stay, watch movies, play games make music etc. its so stable that sometimes i don't have to reboot or switch off for a month.

i anticipate that my hdd will be the first thing to fail, i'm just hoping this laptop lasts until the ivy bridge chips come out next year. plus its not really worth me upgrading yet, this laptop does everything i need!

my entire point there is that people use the fact that macs break against macs. Of course it's not microsoft's fault my comp broke, i built it myself with dodgy prts, cracked windows and anti virus etc so it was bound to go wrong lol. My point is you just cannot say one is better than the other, in my experience mac is much better, clearly in yours thats not the case.

I've had Windows 7 Acer Laptop and Macbook Snow Leopard Black issue, and the both have broken.
there is no better choice in what OS you decide to use, just preference.
Personally i wouldn't get a laptop, get a Desktop - if you wanna make music on it, it'll take you further!

I've gone back to an XP Desktop now with no connections to the web to save myself from getting dirty XP attacking virus's, sucha a charmer!
