Was talking to my mate on the office communicator type thing at work the other day (I was working at home)

Dan: DJ Madd - Awaken. Now I know why you bum Black Box
Me: I don't bum them
Me: Actually, as you say that, I'm listening to Commodo & Lurka - Airtight, wearing a black box t-shirt, whilst on chemical, where I've just ordered another black box t-shirt and Lurka - Tempted.

Yeah, they're both run by the same guy (Thinking, a mod on here). Not sure what the criteria for being on one label or the other is though.

Someone will know.

Black Box - 12" Box Clever - 10"

Not sure other than that, although Box Clever seems more like an upcoming new talent sort of think while Black Box is for the already established artists?

for me, box clever is more into deep dubstep and black box in "classic" dubstep
Have pity for the bad english of a french guy !

i think perhaps box clever is a bit more experimental but they definitely have a different kind of output, i just cant put my finger on it really. i usually find myself insta-bagging the black box releases and then after listening to box clever more, appreciate it over time. only just bought return / stabiliser by lurka and that is huge!

this sorta... the beats from box clever are suppoesed to be limited editions of 500 too correct?

Can definitely see that, Although some arn't really experimental, like Benton - Sinners/Necromancy,
But then ones like Cymatic - Glue/Hound Dog are definitely experimental. hopefully Thinking will let us into his mind and share with us what makes black box, and what makes box clever.

i feel a bit overwhelmed by the vibes in this thread!

first I must thank all the musicians who make the label group what it is - without them none of it would happen!

re: Black Box & Box Clever, the latter was conceived as a kind of 'junior' label that would see artists 'graduate' to Black Box. As often happens though, the artists signed to the label dictated the sound of the label and it kind of came into its own - nowadays I feel like it's more of a organic/tribal/dread kind of sound, whereas Black Box is perhaps more about bigger tunes and a techier sound.

Also, yep Box Clever is generally limited to 500 copies, although I relented to massive pressure and did a short repress of 001 - I don't think anyone who wants to buy a record should be denied the opportunity to do so, especially in this day and age of low sales! Frankly most labels are happy to sell 500 copies these days....

Thanks again to everyone supporting the sound, there's loads more to come in 2011 - on Black Box we have forthcoming records from Benton, LAS & Desto, Truth and also LP/EP projects from Seven, Madd and Data. Biome is next up in the XXX series, and there's Synkro & Kahn 10"s yet to come on Box Clever this summer, plus more Lurka and TMSV as well I expect!
