If you want to get reason, rewire it with ableton. Reason by itself doesn't compare but combined...

ive been using solely reason 4 for about 3 years. ive been tempted to switch DAW's many times and have stuck with it only to keep expanding my skills with each synthesizer and the overall structure of my entire mix. i will say i would love to do some rewiring into ableton but as of right now im running reason 4 on a 500mhz processor in this ancient ass laptop and it's about all it can take.


Reason is the best IMO for the way it is designed. It is unlike any other DAW out there (that I know of) in the sense that it represents a hardware rack. Visually, it's pretty, and it has a lot of hidden power that a lot of people love to disregard.

I wouldn't say so, I've tried re-wiring and I don't find ableton powerful enough IMO that is of course other people might love it...
but seriously reason if used properly can be amazingly powerful people just watch boyinaband tutorials and think that is all its capable off but listen to the songs in my sig they may not be of you're taste but the sounds are better engineered than people think reason can be, just re-sample a few times and I think its just as good as massive and dare I say.. better!

but at the end of the day to sum up this post it is personal preference.

lol no doubt reason is amazing, but ableton is capable of external plugins and is a proper daw with audio and whatnot. Again, rewired is the best of both. VST support plus Reason's synths and built in FX. Of course, I speak from theory, because I've never used either of these successfully.

Of course both is best! Is it worth the price to get reason when you already have ableton though? Probably not IMO. Other way around? Definitely.

+1 for rewire. i would do it if i could afford reason right now.

u dont always have to rewire. u could get record for $150 like i did (thats way cheaper than buying another daw and all the plugins to go with it)...and walah now i can edit audio...and the the way they have it laid out is much easier to work with. and its way better than rewiring because if you have reason installed, record is reason. its not running 2 programs as if you rewire..

i would like to get ableton one of these days, though. just not yet.

Ableton+Reason > Ableton > reason

I have both.... rewire is fun and all but usually ableton can handle everything I need.

As for individual programs I started producing on reason, switched to ableton and never went back. After being a reason user for a long time the effects start to sound really distinct, and all my tracks "sounded" like reason. Also when i tried to switch back I immediately missed the simplicity of the workflow in ableton compared to reason and I dont have record so i couldn't do audio.

And doing things like moving wires from the bottom of my rack to the top with a laptop pad is a bitch.

Wow, I don't think I could handle using the laptop pad, even with ableton... a thunderstorm took out my USB ports the other day and I was freaking the fuck out at the prospect of not being able to use a mouse. luckily they started working again after a couple of days

Um guys..for the record, in reason you can right click on the wire output and select destination in order to avoid dragging wires...

And no pun was intended there

So out of curiosity, what's your producing process? Like what do you do on ableton, and what do you do on reason?

For a prime example of this search the Foamo masterclass which can be found on youtube

reason has some good sound design possibilities while i find ableton's workflow and sequencer much easier after you get to know it. Also ableton has clip and arrangement view which is useful but can get u caught up sometimes when u just make a bunch of clips and not a song.

edit: yeah i forgot you could right click in reason its been awhile since i been doin a lot of cable shuffling

ha ha you do know you can right click on the input/output port and just select where you want the wire to go xD

reason is so sick for the synths and some of the fx i.e scream. I learnt in reason, and then moved to reaper as you simply cant do without the possibilites for audio, makes sampling resampling and any sort of audio editing so much easier. Its all about the rewire. Use reason like a vst within whatever your other daw is, get the best of both worlds. Becasue i started in reason it makes a lot of sense, you can get really creative with routing in a w ay that im unable to do in other daws (even thoug im sure its possible) and i am yet to find a decent vst replacement for the synths and fx.

Both are as effective

just pick one and learn it.
Reason used to have an inferior sound engine, it doesn`t anymore.

Ableton has vst support.

how on earth is "used to have an inferior sound engine but doesn't anymore" a "pro"?

love ive been using reason for only a year and a half now and i JUST recently figured tha tout

people must think i have a lot of patience when i describe how i work in that software
