Yeah I think he's correct in that this scandal has destabilised the press/politicians dynamic that has been in place at least since 1997 (possibly we could date it back to when the printing unions were smashed?) at least a little. There is still much to do though if we want to have a press which doesn't skew and shape
the perception of public opinion (which has its own but not absolute perception on public opinion itself) and which prevents us from participating properly in a democracy. I stress though that there is much to
do. Real, lasting press reforms will never happen on their own. It's far too easy to scapegoat a few individuals and then carry on as normal.
I'm going to plug that Dan Hind book again because it really is that good. Checkit:

I find it a lot easier to identify with these amoral journalists than the ridiculously indignant public figures attacking them.
the guy's argument about coogan taking murdoch's money and then slating his newspapers was on point.

Fair enough on the public figures, but I don't think this should change how we relate to the media - it is a real problem that the powerful interests of media outlets have so much influence. That doesn't mean that Coogan isn't a hypocrite or that politicians are sincere when they are wheeled out to condemn NoTW. The problem remains however.

This is terrible, i feel sorry for all the peoples families who have been affected just to they can sell a news paper, journalists are reporters, it is their job to report not to interfere. newspapers should report the news not make it.

the entire establishment had indicted itself long before this scandal and they're cutting off a limb to save themselves.

Are you referring to News International cutting off their tabloid 'limb' to preserve the body? Absolutely. What I'm saying though is given the importance of the news to legitimise government decisions right now (and let's face it, Murdoch Inc. has underwritten the austerity agenda and has been pushing and peddling lines to that end, including re: benefits, union-bashing etc.) this creates a crisis of legitimacy which goes all the way through to number 10. This in my view is a good thing and one we should exploit.

news international have cut off a limb to save themselves, and the wider establishment are having their media arm operated on in the hope they can stop the infection spreading.
but really they're all very very sick.
