I'm a massive hypocrite when it comes to presets. I always tell other people it's fine to use them and that loads of top producers use 'em. It's a great way of saving some time and cutting down to actually writing some melodies and having some fun...but I still rarely use them. I'm just one of these people that has to make as much of something myself or I don't really feel it's mine. Not just with music it's the same with everything.
Something I seriously need to get over IMO.

I`ll use a preset in a totally different way to every one here.
So then why would using a preset be an issue?
Brutal Electro I can understand.

Brutal Electro is a good example. People recognize it and are scornful towards it. It gets overused and just becomes annoying. Not so much of a big deal with pads and stuff like that though.

I don't think it's an issue if you just use it as a platform sound and then modify it beyond belief if that's what you're getting at.

At the end of the day, 99% of people listening to your music will not recognise that you're using presets. I mean, I didn't even pick up on the most blatant use of Brutal Electro in D Double's Street Fighter until it was pointed out.
If you're happy with it, do it, no one else will care. Generally I like using a mix, I synthesis all my basses and most of my leads, but pads/stabs/drums are all mostly presets/samples.

Reason has a seagull caw that I hear being used everywhere.
No one else notices it.
I think it boils down to personal production integrity.
I would never wash a preset that was recognized.

Just consider, though, as other people say, well established producers use presets all the time. Whether that informs your decision is, like everything else, up to you.
correct answer!

It's odd that people get all ratty about preset usage. Even though most of the people who do sample their parents record collections..

when i use a preset ill very often mix it in a special way...
its just something that i do naturally...
like alter its tonality within the mix...
i also like to start from presets when i make patches.. i think its a great exercise and teaches u lots.

Sorry, your statement just seemed to be a general statement about feeling better about yourself because you don`t use presets.
You know, sort of saying the rest of us plebs using them just really feel bad about ourselves on a daily basis.
Maybe I read into that though.
