what i meant stands elsewhere then theory... a bit like hendrix, who i believe KNEW theory very well... i cant read notes and i can't know what chord im playing on a guitar but i darn know what works with what and ive begun recognizing patterns and stuff.. he didnt know traditional theory, but he knew something for sure... he had a knowledge of some sort... u cant write little wing without any understanding of progression...

i dont want to sound nosy, theory IS essential to anyone who wants to learn something (even if its just technical tool-related theory)... but there is that extra mile that u can go if u find ways to feel the things ur learning... kinda get what vibe they have...

this is especially true with mixing.. like when tweaking sounds, sometimes i go like ''wow that makes it cheerful :D'' or ''woah, that comes from hell''... and it teaches me a whole new lot about what im trying to accomplish...

with drums i guess its just a matter of getting physical and understanding ur natural groove... and pockets, and shit

really, stuff that is not as theorized as the rest of the stuff everyone spends time learning about...

DARN IM A NERD, please dont feel this is a nosy dandy post... i mean it, really

Hendrix didn't know dick about theory - he just locked himself away, took a shit load of drugs and practiced until his fingers bled.

OP - You don't need to KNOW anything. Theory, tutorials, guides, rules...it's all bullshit at the end of the day IMO. Do your thing. Just do it. Don't think about it, just do it. If it sounds good and sounds how you want it to sound, awesome. If it doesn't, try doing it differently until it does. Repeat until you're happy. Then do it again.

wub i know that technically speaking he didnt know any theory but my post was kind of expressing the fact that he knew HIS theory... he's darn learned something out of these hours of practices :P thats what i mean...

sometimes people want to know if other people know theory because they want to gauge the amount of stuff they've got to master before they become that good... well i at least was like that.

guitar player stochelo rosenberg doesnt know theory, and while i was learning guitar, i thought it was an encouraging thought... now i understand it means that he mustve developed his OWN theory and nomenclature... which is even crazier

not learning from a book is still assimilating a lot of info... sometimes even more then with just a book... thats why we say practice practice practice...

that was my very diffuse, abstract and pragmatically useless point... and it actually all comes down to what uve just said (wub)

Practice practice practice.

Think you're getting theory and technique mixed up tbh - but we're largely stating the same point anyhow 8)

ahaha nah i dont mean technique. i play guitar with no knowledge of note names on the fretboard whatsoever but i know that the "diamond chord" goes well with the "ladder shaped chord" and that usually these sit around that scale that goes like 4-3-3-3-4... etc. and that usually that'll go wrong with this and that and that.

i mean, theory/rules but self figured-out. not playing skills.

ya dig? :S

MUST LEARN MOARRRRR

Just keep devouring information man, never hurts to know more, there's no set amount you need to know, just keep going.

It's nice to know that people like learning. :W:
I know too many people that think that they don't need to go out of their way to learn anything because making pop music sells, "I've got something original that people will like no matter what" kind of attitudes, people judge how good you are by how many shows you've played and how long you've lasted as a band... The music scene in Utah is messed. Yeah, there are some diamonds in the rough, but for the vast majority, this State is a breeding ground for folk/hipster bands and soft acoustic pop music, along with a million cookie cutter "hardcore" and metal core bands. Going to a local show is more often either a huge hippie sing-a-long, a bunch of hipsters on stage, or an hour of non-stop sub par breakdowns and hype.

Sorry bout the rant
But I find learning to be really refreshing. I discovered dubstep by researching electronic music, and discovered jungle and DnB through researching dubstep. If it weren't for that, I'd be one of those many musicians who think I'm hot shit like the rest of my home town, and I wouldn't have bothered brushing up on my recording and mixing skills.
Sometimes I learn things that are pointless, but that branch off into things that are more pertinent to what I want to learn. Besides, spending hours and hours looking things up and researching is LOADS better than vegging out in front of a TV...

...or getting 100% accuracy/0 deaths through an entire game of Resident Evil 4  :6:
