Do every subject on this forum end up in a Skrillex discussion?

it's illogical to think anyone that makes spongebobstep has a unique sound. Only coki can claim that right? what if he never made that track, would someone one else have gone that dirty? would it of caught on and evolved into what it is now?

if someone made filth before that, let me know, I'm old and out of touch.

I think a signature sound lies in the combination of one's sound design, mixing, and the composition skills. Skrillex didn't invent the Yoi/Formant/S&H sound or the technique of using chopped up vocals. Instead, it's the way he composes his tracks and the places he uses them at, that are similar in many of his songs and give him a "signature sound". This should be pretty evident to all of you who have entered into some of the competitions on this very forum, where you have to give maximum effort with a minimal amount of samples.

Your signature sound is who you are, it's the culmination of knowledge that you've gathered that makes you into the producer you are today. Anything else would be uncivilized.

Signature sound can mean many things IMO.


I mean, I use quite similar hat programming/processing techniques in pretty much every tune I do, but I don't think I'm at the level yet (in terms of skill or productivity) where people would listen to a tune and be like "Yo, those are Wub hats I can hear!"

What is S&H? I have guitar VSTs and one of them is Random S&H, but I can't find anything about it on Google.

the whole skrillex having no signature sound, or actually anyone having a signature sound personally i think is all about your personal opinion. If i hear skrillex's hnnnggg bass (sorry but idk another way to explain it) i know its by him, if i hear distant sounds with lots of creative delay and simple broken beat but effective drums with pitched vocals, i know its burial. if i hear a wobbling triangle wave with a matching sub bass, i know its kromestar. I could say mala and flying lotus sound the same, and i will probably get someone coming in correcting me in a 5 paragraph repsonse. Alot of these replies look like they are based on their personal opinions. I honestly i can say if you showed me 2 tracks that i never heard before, one by mala and one by loefah, i couldnt tell you which one is by who. But if the 2 tracks were by flux and skrillex, i could tell you. It depends what kind of music you prefer.

p.s. loefah and mala are SICK. i havent listened to much flying lotus

I would also recommend Blockhead. Not dubstep but he's still REALLY good. Listen to his song Music Scene.

I wholeheartedly agree. I think people who limit a signature sound to one element are holding themselves back from the possibilities of developing something even greater.

Also...I don't think I've EVER heard one of your tunes man, where ya hidin' them?

I don't put out a whole lot tbh. One on my Soundcloud, and another that will be added to my Soundcloud shortly once I redo the mixing/mastering on it after the sample pack contest this month.

People say I have my own "sound"...

It guess it just comes from how you approach your music.

Processing techniques, drum/sample choice, synth choice, how you create textures, vibe and structure all make someones "sound".

Look at people like Mala, Pinch, Silkie & Quest..

You can spot their tunes from a mile off.

what makes a good producer great is when you can tell immediately who its by imo

Agreeing with wub, FlyLo is just that dope.

Fly-lo is the man, deffo has his own sound.. All about Camel or Spicy Sammich for me.

As a lot of guys have said, your signature isn't in your sounds and patches, it's the way you do things, ie composition, arrangement.

One example is Datsik, compare his earlier tunes like Nuke 'Em and Havoc to something like Southpaw. His sounds have changed a lot, but the essential is still there, he keeps it all in the vibe, consistently that dark and heavy, hip-hop like atmosphere in all of his music.

Or take skream. He puts out all sorts of stuff, but when you hear a skream tune, you know it's a skream tune, it's not the sounds, it's the technique, how things are layed out and put together.

Another important part is the mixing of your track, certain aspects to your mixdowns that make your tunes sound like your tunes. I see mixing down as part of composition, the subtle differences can often define how a track sounds and how it is received and recognized by listeners imo
