Unless there was a big overhaul of the economy, I think someone would find a way to make money out of this.
Couldn't you just print the material?

From what?
Material? Like print unlimited amounts?

My idea is based on the assumption that you'd be given material on purchase

But if you printed material you would use up all the original material, you wouldnt gain anything.

It's not a Star Trek. And even they don't make stuff out of nothing. They still have to restock raw materials.

They generally do it with either wax - to be cast
or various plastics...that are relatively finished straight from the machine..
but have to be soaked in chemicals to remove the support materials
They can also do it with powdered metal and ceramics that are lazer flash fired to fuse..
but all of this is ultra mega expensive...and a huge pain in the ass...
It's all too glossy and pseudo-perfect for my taste..
and I have zero faith that someone is going to hire me to sit around and jockey these machines..
not to mention..working on this kind of stuff all day would make me sick...does make me sick

...the technology does have practical uses
...like in customizing hip replacements
but when they talk about it replacing shopping - that is just ridiculous
I personally don't want to have to do all that work to get my what - litterbox

It's like the humvee of the design world.

Yeah - well so can a 12 year old with a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of equipment
