Sound on sound website is good to find some bargains as is gumtree, if poss try and see and test the item before you buy it. Also if your happy to wait a month or two VEMIA will have a new auction and they're very good at making sure the stuff works before hand.

Nah, Slothrop touched on it already, but I want a hardware synth so I can stop looking at a fucking screen all the time.

And outside the studio, I'd rather have a jam session or play in a band with a real synth than with a laptop and a midi controller, just not the same.

If you actually sit down with a real synth and play with it you'll quickly realise the appeal they have over soft synths and controllers.

I've got a Roland D-50 but it takes the piss to build patches.

I want something that isn't screen based (ie Novation Ultranova), or has a software program to modify its sounds, don't need any more soft synths.

Suggestions?
Access virus TI snow. 'nuff said. Full plugin integration with your DAW. Gorgeous sounds.
I'd buy a house though.
Point me to a house that's that cheap and you have my blessing. A virus snow really isn't that expensive for what you get out of it.

Roland Juno 2 - what do people think of it? Found one I might get.

And also, what do people think of the Doepfer Dark Energy? Its not got a keyboard and its only monophonic, but it seems to make some unearthly epic sounds.

Not sure where it would fit in with my style of production now I think of it but .. It just sounds so ..

i haven't used the doepfer myself, but I hear nothing but good things about it due to it's analog circuitry.

Roland Juno 2 is gone :(

I really like the sound of the Dark Energy its beastly but its monophonic so ..

I'd instinctively steer clear of monophonic, but thinking about it, most of my lines do tend to be monophonic. So given that and some way of recording it I'd probably be alright. YMMV, though.

NB the Dark Energy isn't good because it's got analogue circuitry in it, it's good because it's got well designed analogue circuitry in it. Not everything with a couple of resistors sounds like a minimoog...

I hate fiddly DAW interfaces, it's so much easier having something to actually physically manipulate... + analogue > digital

Just thought I'd say to round off the thread, got myself a Nord Lead, the first one, thanks to Aliasa for the gumtree reference and to everyone else who helped.

(excited as fuck btw :D)
