Re: Shangaan Electro 180 BPM South African Dance
I think you're taking offesne and not looking at cultural behavior.
I love the fact that the USA is easily the most culturally diverse place on the planet.... a common theme is that despite your americanized behaviours most minorities purposefully maintain portions of their herritage through clothing, music, food, etc.
There for, to retain that portion of your culture, music is put at an emphasis, to a level my white friends did not have. I mean my white friends listened to music, their parents listened to music, but outside of car rides they never listened to music and danced together with their friends and family.
Dancing really isn't uber manly in white america.... for a lot of our country (dunno about yours) anything outside of a fist pump or 2-step is a 'thats gay bro'.... where in a lot of other cultures being able to dance is insanely macho.

I agree it's about the environment one grows up in, no matter what their ethnicity is.
Maybe some people just grew up with their parents listening to music you can't exactly "dance" to. Like classic rock or something, not exactly what one would call "danceable". Also, as pkay was touching on, to some people music isn't very important. There's a lot of people out there who only listen in the car and whatever is playing on top 40 and never care to dig deeper. That usually gets passed down to their kids too, though of course there's always exceptions.
There was a thread on shangaan music a couple of years ago that sparked a similar debate. I think a lot of it is pretty good, some quite cheesy too (like all music I guess). I've heard that mzo bullet tune before and that's the one, I'm picking that up. Couldn't find it before! Btw there was a white guy dancing in that video, and I've seen white people footworking in Chicago, no one makes fun of them. If someone is good they get respect.

this is the one! its the best out of the whole compilation thats been doing the rounds. i've done a little bit more digging too and its really the best track to come out of the that scene that i have come across. the vocals are really powerful, apparently...
someone needs to show them about basslines though. some of the tracks dont have any AT ALL!

Re: Shangaan Electro 180 BPM South African Dance
it`s funny how folks from other countries enjoy this.
it`s like you need to leave SA to enjoy it.
I listen to all of these types of music but really never enjoy too much of it.
It`s just years and years of pantsula, kwaito, deep house, etc. has made me kind of deaf to it.
A lot of the deep house and kwaito that I hear played in Taxis and cars is really amazing deep bass stuff.
I actually need to spend more time collecting tunes.
I know though that they just win`t get appreciated here as much as you lot will appreciate it.
Listen to masikande for one.
Lots of the more rural music is like these vids posted.
Laurent - you`re missing the point.
They don`t look for bass like we do.
The rhythm is where it`s at.
The South African deep house and kwaito is more bass orientated.

Reminds me of http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TRAVEL/04/2 ... index.html
For discerning clubbers around the world the hottest sound in dance music right now is coming not from New York or London, but from the townships of Pretoria, South Africa.

I hadn't heard of this before till I went over to badger's with wubstep, got high and fell in love with how happy these tunes make me feel. Big up Badger for introducing this to me and bigup this thread. Little downs to narrow minded racism.
Bass music lover since day dot.

CAN WE TURN THIS INTO AWESOME AFRO VIDEOZ THRAD?
I've seen Konono no. 1 live, they filled the entire music hall with VIBES of the electric likembé.
The Fela Kuti documentary "Music is the Weapon" is an incredible insight into the power Music has.

admittedly i'm not too aux fais with south african music and culture, but i cant help that it would really benefit from a bassline.
dont get me wrong, i'm feeling some of it but i think its in need of beefing up in the low end.
could you suggest any other south african music thats not off that compilation? a bit of insider info?

those are both killer tunes, i don't even understand the lyrics of the songs but i just love the rhythm and dancing.
It's about dropping a track at the wrong speed, and it sounding better than the real thing.

Kind of weird but living in ZA I had never heard of Shangaan Electro until that compilation came out last year. Shitloads of Kwaito and house, yes, but none of this stuff.

Only local article I can find on Shangaan.
Not dance, but in terms of good, exciting music BLK JKS are probably the best thing to come out of ZA in a while- also mentioned in article.
