I can appreciate Skrillex, Klaypex, and Zomboy as artists, but they're definitely not dubstep. That shit's dirty electro. I can also appreciate your putting them into Guitar Hero, as that game is pretty fun, but for the love of god please don't label it as dubstep.

Really, it is videos like these that led to my interpretation of the genre. I mean, every uneducated person looking for "dubstep" will expect to find electro house. The dubstep genre is clearly being redefined by popular culture. A lot of you on here are really sensitive about this but I don't know what can be done about it.

Also with all the modern/mainstream hate, do you not even appreciate the sound engineering behind it? That music is so satisfying to listen to. The way tension is controlled by dancing all over the frequency spectrum just blows my mind when it is done well.

Those videos, and the fact that they make people think that thát is Dubstep, is exactly the problem.
So, you wanting to include this kind of music into a game like Guitar Hero, causing it to spread through an even larger public, while it being labeled as Dubstep is exactly the same as what those videos are doing. I think that's why you received this immense pile of negative comments.

And the reason why most of us are so 'sensitive' about this is, I think, because in a way we are seeing something that we love getting raped by the mass public. Truly, I don't hate on Skrillex as a person, nor do I hate the people that listen to his music. And yes, I personally can't stand listening to his music, but that's why I don't listen to it at all and try to stay away from it as much a possible.
It's just the fact that everyone is calling it Dubstep that aggravates me. Because it simply isn't Dubstep.
I try not to pay too much attention to it, but sometimes it just makes me mad when I hear these 15 year old hipster kids talk about how sick Dubstep is and pretend like they know all about it while they clearly know fuck all about the genre because they're talking about a new Skrillex tune.
Also the fact that all them lot seems to be calling it "Dub" lately proves how ignorant they all are. Dub isn't an abbreviation for Dubstep, it's an entirely different genre of music.

Thanks man, for levelling with me. I really didn't need all of that disrespectful bitterness from the other guys because I am very open minded and like to appreciate things from as many different perspectives as I can. This is the response I have been waiting to see and I do appreciate everything you are saying. That said, there is zero chance of the "mainstream" interpretation changing now it has become common knowledge. For every person enjoying "real" dubstep for the past decade there are 1000 people who found Skrillex in the past year and they are all calling it dubstep. I will continue to refer to it as dubstep too and yeah, I will now KNOWINGLY contribute to even more misinterpretation. Why? Because the term "dubstep" is what sold those videos to millions of people and it is also what will sell my guitar hero project to people who listen to the music I am charting. 99/100 people searching "dubstep" on the web today are looking for electrohouse/dirty electro or whatever the correct term is and I have to follow that otherwise fans of guitar hero and those songs aren't going to find my work!

I am sorry. No, not for contributing to even more misunderstanding, but that your genre is most definitely getting pooped on by mainstream culture.

Dubstep can have the lfo's like that but it has to be around 140 bpm. The song in your original post is some kind of 120ish electro song.

I acknowledge that there is a problem with mislabelling of genres and the general ignorance of the casual music listener.

Seriously, I do sympathize with you but deal with it and grow up. I didn't cause any mislabelling to happen in the first place and there is nothing I can do about it now other than go with the opinion of most people. I'm not going to help defend the genre "dubstep" because 1. it is faaaaaaaaaar to late to do anything about it (like I already mentioned) and 2. I might spend hundreds of hours on this project and like any human being I will want to maximise my potential audience, so calling it electro house is just plain stupid when most people think otherwise.

Can I just ask what's in it for you? What do you achieve by including this "Dubstep" into Guitar Hero?
I mean, you'd upset alot of people by doing so (I know you said that you sympathize but I think you don't really give a fuck), so if you don't really get anything out of it then why making all this effort?

mate, no...... I COMPLETELY mean what I say about how I sympathize with you and I am not being sarcastic or immature like some people have been toward me. It sucks for you that your genre has been "over run" by popular culture and I think I have made it very aware I realise and appreciate this. The theme of my argument is "deal with it, accept it and even embrace it" because it just isn't going to change. With regards to charting it for guitar hero, what is in it for me? These tracks have unique melodies which will spawn challenging and enjoyable charts for Rhythm games. You won't know this but my YouTube channel is dedicated to making original music for guitar hero. I make the songs myself and while I am not an expert in any way, I have earned a lot of respect and thousands of subscribers listening to my music which I am extremely greatful for. As soon as I found dubstep (and I'm talking about my buddy skrillex) I quickly realised the potential for some fun guitar hero charts and wanted to jump on the dubstep bandwagon and get it in guitar hero.

I would like to see people on this forum calm down and be more open minded when it comes to guys like me contributing to misinterpretation because it shouldn't be a "crime" anymore. You have to accept that anything with LFO modulation and bass drops is a dubstep track to 99/100 people. You have to accept that people like me are going to sign up on your forum expecting to find all the "skrillex" enthusiasts and then NOT crap all over them with stupid facepalm pictures when they are being friendly. You gave me the moral high ground right from the start with those those posts. It is just plain wrong to hate people for their opinions and flocking together like you did exposed an overly protective "cult" completely obsessed with defending a genre which has already been completely redefined.

In summary:

Deal with it = have more patience with the misinformed
Accept it = don't even bother correcting the misinformed and let them run along none the wiser!
Embrace it = don't get upset when you know someone like me is contributing to misinterpretation. The genre has a new meaning to most people now and it will always be that way.

I mean it is good to have well defined genres so that communities of like minded people can get together. Perhaps you should take actions to rebuild your community and honestly, the best action in my opinion would be to rename your genre to something else. Shouting and hating people like me I promise you, will not achieve anything. Please please please realise this.
