started writing an e.p about 12-15months ago then decided to just go for an album. concept is down and it's coming together, really got a feel for the sound i'm going for. it jumps off from minimalish-dark dubstep but goes other places.

it's called 'many sounds make empty', my target time for the project is 3 years.

i don't think it will be mixed to flow continuously, but i think it's possible for it to flow and still have gaps between tracks. maybe for a certain sequence of tracks it might make sense for it to flow but in other places that gap can be necessary.

I started writing music for my album with an idea EXACTLY like yours 5 days ago. Like it's the exact same idea, to do all the styles I like, and to make them go with eachother and sort of tell a story, or multiple stories. Not just track after track with no importance.

Mine's going along alright. I'm giving it a year or so give or take so I'm not rushing anything. I want, no I NEED, this album to represent how hard I work and how much I want to make it big in the industry. And by no means am I saying I want to sell out, I'm just saying I really REALLY want to be able to live off of my music. I don't know what will make it on the album, because I'm just doing general ideas with music and lyrics right now, but there will probably be some dubstep, some brostep, some hip hop, some rap, some metal, some smooth jazz, some ambient, some progressive, some chiptune, some everything ya know?

Yeah Chad... um, my first album (2004) had hiphop, glitch, jazz, neo-classical, drum n bass, 7/4 & 11/4 time signatures, gabber, and many more styles... all collected to tell multiple stories, etc... Hell, it was even called "Eating Movies".

Does that mean that you are gonna throw me some royalties for trying to rip my idea?

Yea, Depone definitely stole your totally original idea of doing a concept album...

In relation to original post; My next release is a 6 track, not really a single, not really an album, somewhere in the middle, wanted to do an album but then I figured I'd kinda said and done everything I wanted to in 6 tracks so I didn't wanna jam loads of filler tracks in there just to make it more 'album' like in terms of the quantity of tracks. Its not as genre explorative as what you guys are talking about, drifts between my take on dubstep and ambient but all the tracks are definitely connected. It's like a sort of musical scrap book for the last year of my life.

6 tracks i think can still be an album if you say it is. number of tracks and length (upto a point) doesn't necessarily have to matter.

To depone, bests with making something like that sounds like it'll be a rewarding and gratifying experience. Would perhaps enjoy to do something like that in the distant future.

Been putting pen to paper for a concept album too over the last few days.

I'm approaching the production much like a movie, creating a storyboard first before doing any music production.

I won't start producing anything until the concept is well and truly polished and I've found enough reference material to keep the production phase focused upon the original concept.

So far so good.

I'm approaching the project like a 'dn'b opera, with a story told through music and backed by visuals.

personally i found through exploring my themes musically it made the concept clearer and started showing me where it needs to go.

Dude, I did that too... I wrote out a storyboard and shit. I thought I was special >_>

Personally at least, if I just sit at the computer messing with synths etc, I never get anything done apart from loads of patches.

Writing a storyboard helps guide the process and keep it on track.

It's a rare thing for commercial studios to work without a brief or development plan, so there's no reason not to transfer the work process back into the home studio imo

It's weird because ever since last week when I decided I wanted to do an album, I've been getting ideas like crazy. Like, I'll come up with random lyrics for raps and I'll just write them down and save them. And I'm always coming up with cool stuff musically that I'll just compose in FL and save it. Just small things so that I don't lose all these ideas I'm having, and then eventually I'll go back to them and see if I still like them. Maybe the reason I started writing for this album was because I was ready, but I didn't know it. I just randomly said I was going to start making an album, and it's just going so smoothly. It's awesome.

Once I release my album, it's going to be mind blowing shit, seriously. All the people on DSF that have doubted me are going to be baffled.

i'm not saying don't write anything down, it's just the way you said you're not making any music til EVERYTHING is written out. i just think that might slow things down, you obviously know where you're going so you can start exploring those ideas and you might find parts of it write itself. that may or may not work for you, i find that being so concrete about the process can sometimes inhibit the results.

as always though it does totally depend on how you work.
