That's not true. That takes practice which anyone can learn, it's just recognizing pitches from a sound (be it humming) and transferring. But, even if someone can't do that, is not to say they don't understand scales, chords and harmonics at a basic level so that they can improvise during sessions.

I'm willing to bet there are lots of producers that improvise good enough. I mean, I produced a nice ambient track from improvisation. Those that understand music theory will pick faults, and offer suggestions to further expand the melodies to develop something more interesting but music is personal and people enjoy what I do. I know the areas I lack in, I know I need to improve. Takes time within our busy schedule.

I just think it's a little unfair to assume that not being able to transfer a hum, to a keyboard, means you're doomed to be a useless producer.

That said, we're all entitled to opinions.

I believe (though I don't think I've ever met one) that people do exist who literally cannot do that, but it's way rarer than people think, most people who say they're tone deaf are just a bit rusty. Try playing a note and singing it for a few minutes every day and you'll quickly improve.

There's a really good site with tools on for like training yourself to recognise intervals and chords and shit that I used to use for a while daily but got out of the habit of, and now I can't remember it. Does anyone else remember, because it really helped me :/ It was like a game/quiz type deal where you could slowly increase the amount of different variants of whatever you were practising, and set times and stuff. Was neat.
