i use a hifi and a sub
Re: Are monitors all that necessary?
My hifi's are indeed coloring the sound. But the thing is I'm used to listening to professional music on them, and it's not like it's not coloring those either. So my point is, if I mix to make common elements in my songs match the mix of them in other songs, albiet they're being colored as well, it should produce a decent mix (**i'm not saying monitors don't help)Artie Fufkin wrote:Ya the analogy is perfect (unlike most awkward analogies I've heard from teachers)
The hi fi system is coloring the sound like 3D glasses color your vision.
you can visit http://soundcloud.com/victor_w and listen to 'Insert Coin'...soundcloud is being weird and broken atm.SLASH wrote:.. and victorW post a tune and we'll let you know for sure if you need them. But Yes they are necesarry

Re: Are monitors all that necessary?
I think the getting used to the hifi thing really doesn't matter. there's going to be stuff you're missing and there's a pretty good chance there will be sounds you don't even know are in your own mixes until you hear them somewhere else. let's say you were shooting a movie, would you want to edit it on a 5" portable black and white tv or a 40" hi def flat screen?

Didn't ledge say that he doesn't use monitors or flat headphones but mixes on $5 headphones because he got used to the sound?

I've heard that you can use a reference song to aim for sound wise and base your mixdown off of that.
