There's plenty of non-serious music that can still be heavy.
Especially in Dub you have plenty of inspirational examples right there.

I think alot of dubstep tracks are positively humorous too. I mean, who the hell would take 50kW seriously, as an example? It still can't be denied as a tune.

Intentionally writing humor or "lightheartedness" in music is hard though, especially in instrumentals. Do it badly, and it slides off into cheese real fast.

I dunno, I think when it gets "serious" it also gets just as cheesy too. It's just too emotionally and intellectually easy to go the angsty emo route, use scarface samples and gun sounds, y'know.

Zappa, Tom Waits and Mike Patton are always good for perspective. Check out Clutch too. Closer to home, I think pretty much anything by RDJ/AFX or Venetian Snares is in good spirits.

And always keep locked to the roots, coz that's where it is.

its important to remeber that tunes can be happy without being cheesey. it all comes down to choice of chords and the perception of the listener

The dubbier tunes often use happier chords. a lot of dub coming from people like iration steppers sounds very close to dubstep, downright heavy and can also be happy and uplifting
iration steppers kick ass.

Who cares? As long as people are happy to listen to it.

It's serious music- allowing it to go silly is opening the door to Lighthouse Family refixes shottying down dancefloors

if you ask me, tracks like Burnin' and Shattered aren't dark or serious at all.
Burnin' is just a banging track about pot.
Shattered is as close as dubstep has gotten to crunk.
and we all know crunk = crazy partying and good times.
