true.

but as per the OP, what you do need in order to get the most from this music, is a decent set of computer speakers with a Image much of this style music occurs below 100Hz bass frequencies, and you ought to have something that can move that air. with tweeters to match.

also as per producing, you can easily get started with some software and those type of speakers
But I have to say so many folks who like this music decide to make it... and, well, a lot of them ought not to.
I'll prob get flamed myself for saying this, but I honestly believe you should only get into that if you're already a musician. Lots of incredible producers weren't before they started, and its not to say you wouldn't be good, but i duno... there's a lot of non-musical producers making tons of tunes that we have no demand for, like it or not. A fun hobby is one thing, but unless you're a musical mind who's ready to go all out, then it might not be for you. Just sayin'

welcome to dsf :Q:

Yeah, this is what I was getting at when I said I was 14. Didn't mean to sound like an elitist tool, just trying to say that I don't have much money or any decent way of making it.
No this was not what you were getting at. You wanted people to admire you for being just 14 and already so sophisticated and mature.
You caught me... God, I'm so needy. I just wanted to fit in somewhere... :corncry: Anyway, thanks for the answers, those of you that gave them. BTW I'M SELLING CUSTOM DATSIK APRONS BUY NOW!!!

Things are definitely different now, but I had a modest HIFI set up when I was 11 or so with dual sub towers, 2 bookshelves and an older Denon TT. I had that until I was almost off to uni. I'd say keep your eyes on garage sales, if one thing has remained constant is that wives are always bitching about getting rid of old looking stuff . Use this to your advantage, another choice is cash convertors/pawn shop type places where you can make a 50 stretch a long way. Save your lunch money and make some things happen, you'll likely have to clean it and maybe swap fuses and that but that is half the fun.

Headphones should just be an auxiliary to your actual listening station not the sole source, especially when you are dropping Pinch. Tracks like Swish are meant to be felt as much, if not more, than simply heard, and I won't even tell you how deadly V remix is...

you don't really need monitors or an audio interface. In order to make music you need a computer, a DAW and some good headphones. I recommend the AKG K240s.

Reaper is probably the cheapest option but you can get student price on Ableton Live (I don't know if any other DAWs have that kind of discount). You probably want to test out a few before you buy. Also, you probably don't want to spend 500 bucks on monitors when you're just starting out, even though 70% of people here will tell you to do just that.
ariosa wrote:Get a good audio interface if you use your laptop to make or listen to music! that and a mixer is what i used until i bought my turntables. some external audio cards designed for djing can be used for production too(since my choice for digital djing when i'm not using vinyl is traktor, i would reccomend the audio 4 dj as the best bang for your buck it has 2 channels in and out and is MUCH cheaper than the serato interface)

Can this be used as an external soundcard? As in, to minimise latency etc?

Yes! you can set USB buffer, audio Buffer, and sample rate. i would recommend this over the mbox since it can go up to 96KHz sample rate.

i'm sure you've already noticed most of this forum is 18yr olds trying hard to troll, so just wade thru the bullshit and you'll find good advice

i'd say just get a decent set of pc speakers with a subwoofer . and honestly i'm still using a 20 dollar pair of sony headphones i got from radioshack when i'm just listening. as you get further along with producing i'm sure you'll want a more decent set of monitors but it's not necessary. fruity loops is a good place to start with production since its pretty straightforward.

good luck and nevermind the trolls :4:

I found FL so confusing, when I got reason I understood it straight away.

I would also advise purchasing a cheap condenser microphone for recording your own samples. Sure you can probably get almost any sound of the internet, but a large amount of pads, sound-scapes or percussion sounds are ones i have recorded myself.

i swear i've seen this exact post at least 2 or 3 times before.
"hi, i'm 14-15-16 and i know that's not an age to have musical taste, but i listen to dubstep and i'm american."
post usually includes something about starting out listening to skrillex and not being proud of it.
obvious troll is obvious.
