PLEASE DO THE VINYL ONLY NIGHT!
There is something FAR more romantic about vinyl.
It's SEXY, it captures the music in a way digital NEVER could.
It connects the DJ with the listener in a time sensitive space bending scenario.

It's a great idea, return to the old school, where only talented Mix DJs can express themselves.

i came in to post this. It's called 'acetate'.
yeah, is a good night- something a lttle different because means djs have to delve further back into their collections rather than playin just the biggest tunes of the last month or two

Loads of people still buy vinyl but less and less play it out anymore. You cant use expense as an excuse for that, dj's have played vinyl/acetate out for years and they managed with it. if less and less dj's are willing to play vinyl and promoters dont provide the equipment then we'll lose something special in my opinion. Whats next, two laptops with people mixing off youtube???

what would be more special in your opinion: youngsta playing badman vip on a cdj, or someone playing night on vinyl?
for me, hearing badman vip, whatever the format, would definitely be more special than hearing some well-known track on another format. thus selection > format. thus music > medium.

Id rather hear anything played on vinyl, especially live. So if you heard badman vip on cdj it would sound worse than if it was on vinyl/acetate. Anyway its all personal opinion isnt it.

A DJ of such stature would have a plethora of test pressings and dubplates fired his way on 12" anyway, so artists like that could easily jam a set on vinyl. It's just whether they can be arsed to lug a bag of vinyl around, I guess.... (?)

It's not necessarily DJ's that use CD's = Amazing dubs and up front releases vs DJ's that use vinyl = Only play the biggest dubstep tracks ever released though is it?

If you have good DJs that use vinyl, then they will search for some real unexpected tunes (I know this can be the case for CDJ's too), whereas a lot of DJs that play digitally/use CDs can just rinse the same dubs over and over and over again (Sicko Cell, Swims, etc.). Look at pictures of Ben UFO's wall of vinyl, you think there isn't some records in there that you haven't heard before?

You don't even need to be a big name DJ that uses vinyl to be able to get past the first page of new releases on the Grime/Dubstep page on Chemical Records. I don't even play out, haven't got past the bedroom DJing yet, but I still look for a quality selection that's a little different from the obvious choices.

Ferryman wrote:I'm not sure it matters these days. Although from a DJ perspective I still really enjoy seeing an all-vinyl set tear a dancefloor up. I still only use vinyl for d'n'b and dubstep, but moved on to CD's for house, techno and other business. some formats just feel 'right' for certain genres IMO.

Having said that, one of the things I love about seeing Marky play is that he uses vinyl (or is he on Serato now...?!)
Pretty sure he made the switch a while back, even Andy C has switched now... Not sure if its permenant or just for his Alive thing and overseas sets.

i'd probably go to a night because it was vinyl only. not entirely sure why but just reading the thread title made me think 'ooh i wanna go to that'

not enough people playing vinyl out, the last thing i'd want to see is it disappearing completely. also if you got some of the bigger DJ's to play they might be able to pull some real gems out of their collection for the night rather than just playing a standard set that you'd see anywhere else - that's what might make it unique

I'm having to play a 5 hour set tonight down at my local pub. Vinyl only down there. You know how much I gotta carry down with me! Definitely getting a taxi. I do prefer vinyl, but would be nice to have just one cdj down there!

(It's at 3and10 in brighton if any other heads are about btw, bit of shameless self promotion ;) )

we've been doing a vinyl only night in brighton for a couple years, normally get pretty decent crowds in. Support from some big names as well. mainly dnb though

I was wanting to say this and couldn't put it into the right words.

Theres music which can fit into the "Dubstep" umbrella spanning at least 10-12 years and thats not including all those quality 140 bits from before all on vinyl; a night full of DJs playing vinyl doesn't mean they don't have absolutely massive tunes you've never heard before and it doesn't mean you will just hear classics (but hearing classics on the medium they was meant to be is part of the thing why I want to do this....Hearing a DMZ vinyl rip on a CD isn't the one.. yeah I have - a few times!)

I'm sure if you dug through any vinyl DJs dubstep collection.. You'll say at least once.. "put this on I haven't heard it before" or.. "Oh my ! I havent' heard this in years".

Its my nostalgic/vinyl junkie side which wants to do this / is interested in keeping the culture alive because it IS disappointing when you don't see 1 bit of vinyl being used at a night.. 'least to me!

Obviously no disrepect to any CDJ DJs.. I use CDJs when I dunno if the club has good set of turn tables and no one can vouch for the turn tables which brings me to my other point.. All those vinyl DJs who switched to CDs because of a poor set up, it gives them the opportunity to bring that heavy record bag again!

i've never even touched a dubplate but i love that people spin wax
its much more interesting from a technical mixing standpoint, and leads to more interesting mixes though the average listener probably wouldn't pick up on the differences. I don't like the way many digi DJs power thru tracks like they're in a race. wax sounds warmer too, more personality.

this is an aspect of this idea that people often forget about, it forces a creativity and helps keep the night from becoming dub mania, garethom said it well

it's only one night, not the entire culture, i think its a brilliant idea

You know if somebody's had tracks cut to wax and thus sunk a lot of money into them that they at least think it's the real deal. A guy on here, Burlish, started a vinyl only night in Birmingham, and Be-1ne played the first night, he had so many sick dubs cut. At least you know he was passionate enough about his selection to put serious $$$ into making it happen. Pangaea played too, and yeah, there were some classics (If I remember correctly, he dropped 'The Goat Stare') but he also played serious amounts of tracks I've never heard before.

If you're a good DJ, you'll have a good selection regardless of medium.

true that.

another reason for nights like these is for vinyl culture... help keep it alive! maybe just one night a month is vinyl only? would yield interesting results i think
