music is about making music for urself firstly and then sharing it with others. thus it is inherently egotistical, if ur not making it for urself then, ur not being honest with urself.

the problem lies in popularity, not everything u like will be something that everyone else likes, the more egotistical u are, the more ur music will sound too individualistic.

there must be a comprimise btw individuality and the desire to have ur sound heard, otherwise u will just be making music that only monkeys can appreciate.

for example,

i like ambient pads a lot lol. so i ve experiemented with lots of different genres of music, to try and get my egotistical love/drive for them heard. in the hope that more people will tune into what i call my sound. hense for example this future jungle track i made.

Soundcloud

now im not claiming to be an expert or anything, but i consider this balance between musicality and individuality important, an ego is necessary but so is a reality check..... :cornlol:

I though my ego would blow up when I got signed, but I actually just started to feel a lot more self-conscious about my songs. I guess that's a good thing though, cuz I put a lot more work into them now.

I think I have a healthy ego..

Like Mad EP said. You have to have some sort of ego to say a track is finished and ready for release. I'd even go as far to say it takes ego to even say a track is finished!

Arrogance isn't the one though; to many people have unhealthy ego's where it starts to colour how people listen/like/appreciate their music.. You hear things like "yeah X producers tunes are just sounding really cocky now" when people realise theat they've grown into an arrogant twat.

I disagree that the more individual your music the bigger your ego... I think you need a huge ego to make a tune that you DON'T like.. Most of the guys I've met / spoken with, who make less popular kinds of electronic music, are pleasant characters. Whereas the guys here locally making the wannabe ukf dubstep who I've spoken to (There's alot more of them) are full of ego and arrogance. I truely don't believe they make it because they actually LIKE it, they make it to be COOL. Which is a really shit ego.

yeah but thats just counter culture bullshit for, lets make some music that noone likes because we think its cool, and tbh spend 5 mins on soundcloud prefferably in the ambient section, and ull realize its nowt but a load of cookie crunchers all idolizing their own creation that bares no relevance to the modern world, waht i was arguing was the need for balance, a balance between whats relevant and ur own idyosintric style. u want that balance trust me. its important to know what scene u relate to and what its about, u cant just lock urself up in an attic and make tunes for urself anymore, its just not sensible, plus ull probably go mad lol. u need to have some connection to the outside world whilst still being able to place ur own fingerprint on it. :U:

I have no ego when it comes to my music.. I'm way too critical of myself to ever develop an ego [nothing will ever be good enough for me to think its the shit, haha]
