It should be said that a lot of charities while operating under a "not for profit" style banner, also pay their CEOs inordinate amounts of money.

So if they actually find you work and you don't accept it you don't get money anymore?

People just sitting on their arse collecting tax payer money because a job's 'not good enough' is a fucking joke.

They don't find you "work" though. They force you to work at a company for far less pay than you should have, still at the taxpayers expense, thereby giving the company free labour.

And there's no guarantee of being actually hired at the end of it.

In all honesty though most jobs aren't "good enough" - often mindnumbingly tedious work at a barely-breaking-even wage after accounting for exhorbitant rents, bills, council tax and an ever increasing cost of living. They mostly provide little value to society or the employee, either frittering away tax money on bureaucracy or making the bosses/shareholders richer selling their financial products and flashy light toys.

That's been the case ever since Unemployment Benefit was renamed to Job Seeker's Allowance in the 90s.

The 'fairness' really depends on the work you're being offered. As I mentioned with my brother's situation, there isn't a box on the "Eye Disabilities" form that allows them to register his condition as a disability, so he's not even bothered to apply for JSA because he'll lose it the first time he tells someone he can't work in a strip-lit office for more than an hour without having to go to bed in pitch-darkness for the rest of the day.

His only current option is to rely on his parents retirement fund... I imagine an awful lot of people aren't lucky enough to be able to do that. Was talking to him on the phone last night and we got onto the subject of what he'd be doing if they weren't around or couldn't afford to take him in until he's trained himself (at his and their expense) to do a job he's physically capable of.... "I've thought about that, I'd be homeless. No question."

Theres jobs around for people willing to do them, be that cleaning, shelf stacking or other jobs that some would class as 'menial'. Im not saying that there is enough jobs for everyone but some people do expect too much, having a degree doesnt entitle you to everthing immediately after graduating and some see themsleves as too good for a lot of jobs. It cant be helped if loads of people are doing stupid degrees with no employment factor at the end of it. A job is a job at the end of the day, i lost my job that i loved and i never thought id be portering in a hospital part time but i'll do anything to tide me over. Seems like a lot of people arent prepared to do that.

This whole scenario is a fucking disgrace. And since I imagine not many supermarket CEO's, investment bankers or political aides frequent the Secret Ninja Hideout, I conclude most of you in favour of this are petulant sixth-formers with no experience of the real world who think this kind of shit won't ever happen to you.

It's slave labour, with the beneficiaries of that labour being private profit-driven corporations who are now having one of their main overheads being provided for free by this scheme, at the behest of the government. This stinks like a foetid bubonic corpse and the fact that young people have apparently been brainwashed into thinking that this is not only acceptable but actually a good thing makes me really fucking depressed.

These jobs come with a wage though, this scheme doesn't, it's one thing being specific about the job you want it's another for the government to introduce a scheme co-opting the unemployed to work for their benefits. If these jobs exist the companies should be paying the staff.

It's already within the remit of the DWP to remove benefits from people not actively seeking work, this does nothing to address the the issue of the long term unemployed, it can stifle actual job creation.

And oh yeah what cogidubnus said

You disproved your point in two sentences. There aren't enough jobs full stop, irregardless of it meaning highly intelligent people having to scrub toilets. Why aren't their enough jobs? because all of the money's been sucked out of the economy and into low-tax accounts in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands held by multi-millionaires, some of them doubtless the same ones benefitting by this scheme of slave labour. I anticipate the next batch of JSA claimants being sent to work for the energy cartels, probably on the phones encouraging people to switch providers to continue the illusion of choice.

I didnt disaprove anything, saying there are jobs available but not enough for everyone is exactly what i said. Ive got a degree and ive apllied for cleaning jobs, im not shy of work and id do that to earn a wage. I agree with what you say mate, the system is wrong and were in this whole mess due to cuts that certain people caused by being greedy.
