Hmm, well trance actually has a lot of sub genres and might rival it in diversity in terms of what can and has been called trance but I'll concede on dnb and UK garage. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I just don't think it has a characteristic that separates it as its own super genre in the way rock, jazz etc are.extremesociety wrote:I guess what I'm saying is that Dubstep is further along than any of these ever were in terms of the diversification they've brought. And even further, because of these genres, Dubstep is afforded the opportunity.leyenda303 wrote:And what about mainstream peaks of genres like UK garage, trance and dnb? Fuck, now that I think about it more, yeah maybe not house. But still, some house DJs have begun to include that "dubstep feel" into their sets.

And anyway, I don't even think hip hop is on the same 'super genre' status as rock, jazz, classical etc. I'd put it and dubstep under electronic music as a comparable genre size. If anything house is bigger than hip hop anyway.

The point is, it's slowly dripping into the larger social consciousness as those other genres have before it. At least it seems so to me, although it's hard to tell at the time it's coming up.
This, we can disagree on.leyenda303 wrote:I don't even think hip hop is on the same 'super genre' status as rock, jazz, classical etc.
I suppose, yeah. But for now—but maybe not for later. I'm most definitely talking speculatively.leyenda303 wrote:I'd put it and dubstep under electronic music as a comparable genre size.
I should say when I say rock there I'm talking in its broadest sense so that includes metal etc. Ok well do you agree that house is bigger than hip hop? If so surely that's also comparable to rock and jazz in your opinion? And what about mainstream peaks of genres like UK garage, trance and dnb? By your reasoning that dubstep will become a super genre did these?
Thanks for clarifying that mate, I've seen the light. I definitely thought it was a small niche genreslanguage wrote:is this man a donut?

For sure, but Dubstep influenced elements are making their way into top 40 tracks more and more.leyenda303 wrote:House has been incorporated into things like pop and 'urban music' etc to such an extent that people don't even realise it. More top 40 hits (which sadly is what defines pop culture) are house at their heart than hip hop.
True but I would be surprised if those elements are still present 10 years down the line.extremesociety wrote:For sure, but Dubstep influenced elements are making their way into top 40 tracks more and more.leyenda303 wrote:House has been incorporated into things like pop and 'urban music' etc to such an extent that people don't even realise it. And thus, my point. That's what the last generation said about rap.leyenda303 wrote:True but I would be surprised if those elements are still present 10 years down the line.extremesociety wrote:For sure, but Dubstep influenced elements are making their way into top 40 tracks more and more.leyenda303 wrote:House has been incorporated into things like pop and 'urban music' etc to such an extent that people don't even realise it. But hip hop in it's original sense isn't really present in top 40 stuff except for the presence of rapping anymore. Where's all the scratching and sampling? It's like saying Dizzee Rascal 'Dance Wiv Me' is grime just cos a grime MC is over the top. Do you hear much of hip hop in Snoop Dogg's 'I Wanna Make You Wet' cos I certainly don't.extremesociety wrote:And thus, my point. Ok, but I don't want this to turn into a discussion about "what is hip-hop, and what isn't". Hip-hop has a lineage too and diversified into tons of different sub-genres from the Neptunes, to Dirty South, to Trapper rap, to Ludacris guesting on "Baby" (??!!)—just as Dubstep influenced music continues to diversify itself in a million directions, but all still falls under the umbrella of "Dubstep".leyenda303 wrote:But hip hop in it's original sense isn't really present in top 40 stuff except for the presence of rapping anymore. so the size of a genre is defined by how many top 40 hits it influences ?leyenda303 wrote:Thanks for clarifying that mate, I've seen the light. I definitely thought it was a small niche genreslanguage wrote:is this man a donut?

Just because rappers and bling are involved does not make a track hip hop. I think if you took away house it would have a bigger impact than if you took away hip hop that's all. House has been incorporated into things like pop and 'urban music' etc to such an extent that people don't even realise it. More top 40 hits (which sadly is what defines pop culture) are house at their heart than hip hop.
I'd say that's one way of measuring it's relative impact on pop culture which is what slanguage seemed to be getting at. In terms of the size of the actual genre I guess how many sub genres, sub-sub genres etc it umbrellas is one way of establishing how big that overarching genre would have to be. In that case I'd say house beats hip hop again. As for actually knowing the number of tracks produced in both genres and which might have more...I don't think anyone could even begin to claim to know. How would you define a genre's size?LumiNiscent wrote:so the size of a genre is defined by how many top 40 hits it influences ?leyenda303 wrote:Thanks for clarifying that mate, I've seen the light.
