You have to be shitting me, for music production its a Mac & PC game my friend. Dont try getting all im uber linux on us, their audio support blows and you know it. Just saying, it feels like people these days need to drop a "I'm using linux, and its better than you" bomb recently.

all my windows computers either slowed to a crawl or got the blue screen of death. i fixed it by getting a mac.

Got the same windows xp desktop for 3 years and it still starts up in a few seconds. Never had a problem with it.
Mostly use my windows 7 Asus laptop, also runs great but I'm thinking about upgrading to a MB pro.

JR, i would keep an eye on your harddrive, it sounds like it is beggining to fail, especially if thinks like chkdsk are just "magically" dissappearing thats a symptoms of harddrive failure. You can sometimes "fix" it for a little bit by reinstalling but eventually youll starting reading/writing to corrupted/failed segments of the harddrive and it will appear again. or worse just BSOD and never boot again.

oh crap you may be on to something. It just went into a fit of random rapid keyboard ghosting. Volume controls went haywire and the c, b, and = keys were being fed without pressing. I better extend my warranty on this thing...and fast!!!

I'd be a lot happier when we stopped having to hear all that mac bullshit. Seriously, its all the time... i don't want a fucking mac and don't want people continually spouting that they're better. i don't care. as far as i'm concerned if your pc was unreliable, it was your stupid fault as you didn't learn to use your tools properly. i get tired of people going on about macs - you paid at least double for your product so i'm glad its easier for you to use. for the rest of us pc users who can actually be bothered to maintain our system, they work just fine.

and by maintain, i mean not downloading tons of crappy software. my main daw needs zero maintenance, as all my software is installed, all drivers installed etc. its up to date and works fine, so i won't need to touch any system settings unless i decide to add more hardware/software in the future. its not connected to the web so has zero chance of getting any malware, and the whole drive is imaged so should anything fail such as the hard drive, i can just buy a new one and put my system back as it was.

but lately mac has begun manufacturing components in China and i've dealt with a few bogus RAM sticks, and HDDs. no quality control
For 15 years we've had zero machine or component failures, and all of a sudden this year,everything took a shit.
I have no problem with people who use Windows. or Fruity Loops, for that matter. but when i look at either piece of software, i want to throw the computer out the window.

i don't let it get to me, if someone likes mac thats their choice. i just get tired of seeing them going on about it all the time, usually backed up by a load of nonsense about pc's. i.e macs are faster, or macs are more efficient, pc's are unreliable etc. this simply isn't true. and every time a pc thread pops up, theres an instant response from mac fanboys 'i fixed it by buying a mac', its getting old now.

i definitely agree with you on you get what you pay for, which is why i always buy solid pc components. cheap budget systems seem to have more problems in my experience. this is true for a lot of things in life.

i've got absolutely nothing against macs, if i had infinite money then i'd own both a pc and a mac. but as things are, i just try to get the best deal for my money. i checked out macbook pro's the other day, to upgrade from 4gb to 8gb ram(1333mhz) was £160! yet you can buy a full 8gb of the same speed ram for £17 if you shop around. so thats nearly 20x more expensive, i can't see anything about macs that can justify that for me.

But have you used one on a daily basis like you have with your PC? I own both a macbook pro and a desktop PC, my desktop PC is my main music production machine and is not connected to the internet, my macbook is just my browser / everything else, also has logic on it though for when I want to create some beats on the go or whatever, and I can say that when you own a mac, you feel secure with your stuff and files, just trust me on that, god am I sick of the little problems PC gives, whenever I have to fix something on my girlfriends laptop or find some drivers or whatever it is it is just such a slow and negative process.. I have eliminated this problem by having my PC on a no internet connection rule.

i feel the same...i don't like the direction that they're going. they are putting all their attention to the average consumers and forgetting about their pro users who don't want to sacrifice performance and features for a slimmer design that gets hot as shit. i personally think the current mbp is sleek enough, i think they should focus more on packing more features and better performance into it instead of making it slimmer, which they will definitely do soon. but as you stated, the OS is awesome, as well as the build quality.

edit: by the way virtualmark, you realize you can update the ram and hard drive yourself in macbook pros right? i bought a macbook pro and upgraded the ram myself to 8gb and also put an ssd in the main hard drive bay and swapped out my optical drive for a secondary 640gb 7200rpm hdd...

See the thing that i feel most ppl forget while debating PCvsMac is Macs are designed by their OS provider with alot of time spent on creating the most stable and efficient OS experience for a specific set of hardware devices and ONLY those hardware configurations are supported. All of this is done by the same company and sharing alot of the same designers/developers/coders. So macs are a single product almost beginning to end bult by one company.

PCs, The OS is built by one company and then the computers can be built by anyone (sure you can hackintosh macs but thats not my point). Point is WIndows Based PCS are just not ALWAYS going to have the same reliability that macosx does. BECAUSE mircrosoft doesnt test there software with all available hardware configurations (and even if they did you can not optimize your OS for EVERY piece of hardware lol), they dont even really tell what to use besdies a ROUGH estimate of system requirements. The hardware drivers are built by hardware manufactures built on a MIcrosoft SDK. That means a Windows Based PC is not a single Complete product beginning to end, it in fact is a bunch of products slammed into a single package you end up buying from a OEM like HP or Dell.

So the PC to MAC comparison is like apples to oranges. Sure they both are "computers" but in order to compare a Mac to a windows box, microsoft wouldhave to develop their own in house PC system and their own native driver sets. Others wise the debate and comparison of both OS's is MUTE. I can understand that arguing/debating about a mute point can cause both sides to become fatigued and cranky.

I adminsitrate in an environment of 1000+ Windows Based computers, both virtual and physica. Windows makes the enterprise go around. But when im at home or doing anything personal i much prefer my macbook pro to any windows based device. Not because its really any "better" but for my case use it will do what i want better and more reliably IMHO.

I have actually had really good luck using Linux. I use Renoise for production and it works perfectly. It doesn't support windows vst's but there is a steadily growing number of good Linux vst's. Also, LMMS (another DAW) offers native support for windows vst's. While production tool are probably inferior for Linux, it is still my OS of choice for production as well as everyday use. It is free, has lots of open source software, and Ubuntu's speed and ease of use blows windows out of the water.

I can understand why people might use windows, but in my opinion, Linux is the only way to go

The only thing holding me back from full linux production is lack of support for my interface. Unfortunately, I didnt take that into consideration when buying it. If anybody knows of a good interface under $200 that works flawlessly in linux, please share.

As an update to my laptop's situation, it is still running strong. I moved all my music stuff to a desktop pc running windows and my laptop now runs entirely on LMDE (Debian with a bit of a minty twist) linux.

The audio system on linux is far superior to Windows though. ALSA is great, as an understatement.

I've been using custom windows pcs for...12 or so years. Over 7 or 8 systems I've never had a component fail, never gotten a virus (with Somalia level pirating)...I honestly can't remember a time I had a blue screen. My stepdad who's an Apple nut has to bring his macbook back to the shop every few months when something stops working. I can't help but feel that everyone championing apple is trying to justify blowing so much extra money. I just bought a new Inspiron for production for 1000. My stepdads $3500 macbook he got a few weeks ago geek benched about 500 higher. The only difference is his has less USB ports, no optical drive and a smaller screen...and the os's are pretty much identical anyway.

In other words, I don't understand how any rational person sees an advantage with Macs. Shits going to go wrong on any computer eventually, I'd rather take the money id save from buying a mac to upgrade all my components to the highest quality possible and set up a raid system for if shit goes south.
