11'ish years. Only been mixing dubstep since 09 though. Used to mix drum'n'bass until Twisted individual and god awful mc's ruined the scene (for me) back in 01-02 kinda time

pretty much my 10 year anniversary about now after getting my decks (same ones i got now!) when i was 16.
havent mixed a lot for last 5 years due to sorting out my life/ career but much more on it recently

Been mixing for about a year now, i like to think ive improved since ive started im always over critical about my own stuff which sucks, i love djing with decks because i spend most of my day on a screen its nice to get home and chill will getting a nice mix going, pretty good feeling.

i've been doing it for nearly a year now. i think im pretty decent, when i play other people dont seem to notice the mistakes that really wind me up so i think other people may think im better than i actually am. another couple of months and i reckon i'll be at the level i wanna be as long as i practice enough

2 year anniversary for me this month, started off on a Behringer BCD3000 with traktor and then finally got myself decks and a mixer a year later.

Not the same for everyone as some people are really good on USB mixers but my mixing improved massively once i got my own decks, would definitely recommend getting yourself some if you haven't already, stay away from USB mixers imo, they're good for learning the basics but for live performances its best to be able to mix on the industry standard, e.g. pioneer CDJs.

Also becuase with USB mixers you can become very reliant on the visuals they provide instead of the actual beats, leaving some people pretty much incapable of mixing if the visuals are taken away.

For an amatuer DJ little things like differences in jog wheel sizes can potentially make a big difference to your performance if you don't expect them and also its good to be familiar with all the buttons in case someone before you has left them in a certain way - on my first ever live set playing on CDJs, someone had turned the auto cue off one of the CDJs and i had absolutely no idea why my CDs were just playing themselves lol, obviously if i'd known wtf Autocue was at that time it wouldn't have been a problem

And thats just the equipment side of things, obviously amongst that you've got to learn the basics of structure, learn how to beatmatch and understand the use of key changes between mixes etc ...

But tbh its not as hard as it sounds to learn, i completely taught myself to mix, and whilst i'm no where near the best out of all my DJ friends and no doubt still have alot to learn, i'm i am pretty good, and i mainly learnt what i know just by watching other people mix and incorparating different techniques from other people in to my own technique.

Few years now. Was obsessed with the techniques surrounding it for awhile. Now I'm not as into the tricks surrounding mixing. Only concern myself with a single rythme and by far the most important bit, a good song selection. I think 95% of club / party listeners are content if you play the songs they like.

Definitely agree with that, tune selection comes first in my books

year and a half...started on technics sl 1210's and serato...still lovin it as much as the first day i got it! have come a long way since the start...just trying to perfect every mix now...vinyl ftw

started buying records in 93. Got some shit belt drive Soundlab decks in '94 (with +/- 6% pitch - 1 slider for each speed??!!!)

then Technics 1210's in '95.

Mixed breakbeat hardcore and jungle, then Drum & Bass.

Now play Drum & Bass, Dubstep and a little Techno.

Couple of years ago pulled my Technics World Championship mixer off the table and the front panel smashed off ((GUTTED))
Now using 1210's with the shittest Numark mixer you have ever seen!

Personally disagree. Anyone can put a "decent" tune into a cdj or on a turntable and press play. i understand 90%ish of ya crowd aint got a scoob what ya doing and only care bout tune selection. But when a DJ pulls off a silly mix be that 3 decking, double drop or just a real nice smooth transition. Thats what does it for me personally. And even if a DJ has a spot on selection if hes clanging, then it completley kills the vibe of the set and I personally don't want to hear another second. Also especially in this genre you should always play what you're feeling and what you believe in. If you're feeling it and the crowd can see that, then they will (should) feel it too.

last year in april still pretty shit tbh i can only beatmatch songs but i can't get the mix right so still practicing on that part

Yeah I am very new, I really dont know how to tell what key the song is in I still have alot to learn, but I'm perfectly fine with that.

yeah tunes are generally arranged in 16 bar sections so you wanna start the tune you're bringing in at the first beat of a 16 bar section

to op: been mixing 2 years took me about a year before i was confident enough to leave my room with it. My mixing in my room is getting to quite a good level.. live is a different story
