Is room treatment really essential? I mean, I talked to this professional producer who's like 60 and has been producing forever, and he told me that one should only do their mixdown in the open air, (so with monitors) but even the best monitors are near useless if you don't have a treated room.

Would you agree? Cuz it sure costs a shitload to get your room treated

depends on the shape/size of your room....

sometimes you dont need to worry too much, especially if your producing in a fucked up work space

and as long as your mix downs are coming out with with plenty of headroom and the sound produced is of a decent quality than it doesnt really matter...

Decent speakers + ability to turn them up full
Big monitor / dual small monitors
Low background noise
No other people in studio

Lack of samples, VSTs, room treatment, nice chair and headphones are things I can work around. Not being in the mood to make beats, or not having the above requirements are things I can't work around.

Just good atmosphere. I do my best producing at my friend's house which is a revolving door of people. Being able to take off my cans and strike up a good conversation and return to my own little world, is amazing.

monitor connected to a power source(CPU or laptop)
mouse, trackpads are very problematic, unless your use to it
creativity and patience
i have very little money, so i get by with my laptop, with another monitor plugged in. i also have a backup PC but its very old
i also have a casio midi controller.

My chair is shit, it doesn't even swivel :( I found a nice spinny chair behind the mall beside my house once, and I took it home to let it dry cuz it was covered in snow. I found out it was covered in stains and the fabric was all moldy and shit though, it sucked, I was heart broken.

A good laptop! Ableton has crapped out so many times I wish I forked out that extra dough for a decent machine.

And monitors.
