As they see it, everybody speaking Jafaikan ("Multicultural London English") and everybody wearing stuff that would be marketed to black people in America. They didn't seem to get there's more mixing going on in the UK, we don't have ghettos anywhere near to the extent they doJames Kofi wrote:oh right, how do you 'act black'?test recordings wrote:The Americans I worked with last year so the UK youth culture sounds shit, the country's fucked and everyone just acts black

Re: British Youth Culture
Guess from the intro clause! I should probably say "as they saw it" because it's in the past, but it's not my views! Kind of silly in my opinion, even though they were definitely not stupid I don't think American people (or many other foreigner people) generally know what the UK is really like for the average person... hence the general shock at the riots! The Greeks and loads of other European people were loving it though, they see London as a centre of the "Anglo-Saxon capitalism" that fucked up their countries so watching it burn was quite enjoyable... they said the people in suits working in banks were just like the rioters!LACE wrote:hold up. are you paraphrasing someone test recordings, or is this your view as well? can't tell if serious..test recordings wrote:As they see it, everybody speaking Jafaikan ("Multicultural London English") and everybody wearing stuff that would be marketed to black people in America. Re: British Youth Culture
Ali G is actually quite clever if you watch it though, Sacha Baron-Cohen's uncle is the distinguished psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen and he must have had some input from him as well as being a confident actor himself. He proper makes people look like dicks by playing on his image as some stupid wannabe gangster and luring them in to expose themselves...JBoy wrote:Ali g is a prime example of what youth is like in england today, but i wouldnt call it culture.

Re: British Youth Culture
Exactly. If people think Ali G, especially the stuff on the 11 O Clock Show was aimed at taking the piss out of young people then a point has been missed. Just like Borat wasn't seriously taking the piss out of Kazakhstan and Bruno wasn't attacking gays, Ali G was a vehicle to expose bigotry in the people he interviewed who were so prejudiced they couldn't see past the clothes, voice and label of "Channel 4 Voice of Youth"... even so far that people wouldn't call him on saying "is it cos I is black?" when Ali G is clearly a white bloke from Staines.test recordings wrote:Ali G is actually quite clever if you watch it though, Sacha Baron-Cohen's uncle is the distinguished psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen and he must have had some input from him as well as being a confident actor himself. It's a bit of a shame it all ended with him interviewing the Beckhams and stuff for very knowing cheap laughs; he's rightly seen as a cartoon character, but he seemed to lose the satirical cutting edge - perhaps it was too difficult to make a primetime Friday Channel 4 show that still really bit... that first couple of runs of interviews were some of the best satire of their time, though.

Re: British Youth Culture
ali g is a bit of both
sacha baron cohen was/is a massive hip hop fan, he was obviously taking the piss out of the way kids over-excitedly latch onto certain imagery and ways of acting
to claim its all a satirical joke entirely on the people being interviewed is kinda ignorant at the fact that if you saw a white dude who GENUINELY believed he was a jamaican yardie type guy or whatever you'd call them out on that too...
like J-Rocc in Trailer Park Boys who genuinely believes he's black when he's the whitest guy ever, that episode is brilliant if anyones seen it

You can enjoy whatever comedy you like however you want... but it will elicit a response in others if you talk about it on the Internet - that's the way public conversation works, old chap.James Kofi wrote:care to tell me the way in which I should find any other programmes funny? don't want to be laughing in the wrong way.
Whether you see something like Ali G as an attack on urban youth culture or society's attitudes towards urban youth culture indicates something though, I'd say. Plenty of people managed to think Alf Garnett was written for racists rather than as a weapon against them too... satire is often terribly difficult for simple minds.

It fits well with the British use of sarcasm... but yeah people definitely get the wrong end of the stick, even though that might be seen as a minor side-effect it's also how shitty rags like the Daily Mail get to pretend they're so popular as some people read it for jokes!magma wrote:You can enjoy whatever comedy you like however you want... but it will elicit a response in others if you talk about it on the Internet - that's the way public conversation works, old chap.James Kofi wrote:care to tell me the way in which I should find any other programmes funny? don't want to be laughing in the wrong way.

I think the tabloids like the Mail (and it's sister, the Express), amongst others, really give UK kids a bad rap and exaggerate their bad side too. Trust me, it's like a daily dose of poison to to twist older people's minds...

Absolutely. The Mail and Express almost only exist to spread negativity... they're heroin for people who need a bit of hate to get them through the day.test recordings wrote:I think the tabloids like the Mail (and it's sister, the Express), amongst others, really give UK kids a bad rap and exaggerate their bad side too. People have always been wary of the next generation though... first blues was going to send everyone to hell, then rock n roll, then hippy culture, then punk, then disco.... there seems to be a pretty steady trend of people getting grumpier and less tolerant as they get older... it's just that media is so wide-reaching and powerful these days that it's almost impossible to avoid being influenced in some way.
