Had a couple of tunes from them in my 2-step days. They were pretty cool,...........I guess.

Damn, Asher got full on destroyed in that 'battle'. Not much of a battle though, when one guy can't actually freestyle. Career suicide right there.

So Solid had some huge 2-step anthems, but I think what killed them off was that grime came about and had much better lyricists (Dizzee, Wiley, etc) and garage mc's mostly went back to straight party rhymes (Creed, PSG, etc). So Solid was stuck somewhere in between and eventually lost out.

So Solid crew are awful. Standard. The fact some people on this topic are calling them originators is a complete joke.

I've been buying garage, 2-step etc for 10 years now and they never made any real quality tunes just generic, boring ones which reached a more commercial audience and was firmly a zeitgeist in the early 2000s.

They've got more to do with the origins of grime than garage (although I doubt anyone would credit them with this). The production was pretty stark and minimal, was brushing out the swing from the 2 step beat replacing it with harder, more militaristic riddims.

I never said commercial equals bad, simply trying to locate So Solid in context more than anything else.

And I also believe innovators tend not to be too commercial, hence my previous post.

A lot of innovators tend not to actually be good either. Being original and talented is the path seldom travelled.

I think they would be appreciated better if they hadn't been so big at the time and weren't remembered mostly for being banned from venues and criminal proceedings. The thing I liked about them was that you could hear the early 90's hardcore atonality drifting in on a few tunes which I quite liked in comparison to the smoother vibes of some of their contemporaries.

Dilemma = huge tune.

They were garage-rap originators, nobody can deny that.

They also made some fairly awful tunes.

only really gd tune was rap dis even tho it was oxide lol

True stories, So Solid played a big part in the making of grime before it was called grime.

I remember really liking them at the time, but now looking back and comparing them to everyone else, they dont seem as impressive.
Dilema was a big tune. I like 21 seconds too. The Roll Deep redo of Oh No is big as well.

It's not my vibe either but they did something. They made their mark on this music, and on music in london full stop.
