IMHO the top ambience synths are the Spectrasonics stuff (Omnisphere or Atmosphere). Closely followed by Absynth.

I use Rhino 2 for almost everything.
Ambience, pads, etc. are entities on their own with their own character when using FM.
I enjoy Omnisphere but I find the output to take up too much across the frequency ranges.

I've been messing around with Alchemy with the past few days, and i have to say this might be one of the greatest plug-ins i have ever used. The possibilities of sexy drones and pads through the granular editor are mind blowing. Really innovative and Camel have some great tutorials on their youtube page. Learning to use the whole thing has really helped in getting a better footing on sound design in general which was pretty poor before (stretch sample, add sample, add breaks, add bass).
VST and a half.
I would like to use Omnisphere i just cant find a way to pirate it and im not throwing £100+ on a plug in.
Rhino 2 i have never heard of, i'll give it a shot.

Ambitron is pretty spiffy and cheap, although it's only Windows (which may or may not be a problem for you). There's a demo and plenty of audio clips to check out.

the layout is gross on crystal and the sounds are 2 dimensional and plasticy, not to say you still cant do cool things with it, as you can with every synth

Are there any other freeware VSTS that are good for ambience? I'm trying to save up for a bunch of stuff (Saffire interface, KRK monitors, some DJ machine, etc) so I'd really like to drop as little money as possible on stuff right now.

crystal works, i have to put some time on it now that i really understand synths better. but rhino 2 is only 15 bucks, which makes me really tempted. would you reccomend the purchase electro head?

You don`t even understand how good Rhino2 is.
Additive, FM, Subtractive, Sample import, sfz support, etc.
While you`re at it, by the Daniel maurer presets.
Texture and Grain Fields are awesome for pads and atmospheres.
Amazing additive sounds, perfect real world creations of birds singing, violins, etc.
If anything, they show the full potential of Rhino.
I find FM to be a great experience with Rhino.

I second crystal for sure, its really confusing to use and has a weird "mutate" button that completely changes up the sound, but you can make some rediculous sounds with it

I primarily use Rhino in my productions.
Take a listen to the atmospheres and sounds.
Listen to FM Dream, it`s not called that for nothing.
That tracks is 90% Rhino.
It`s even super capable as a drum/instrument synth.
Wave morphing, built in sequencer, key tracking............etc. etc.

There was a no-brainer deal a while back for just $15, I assume it has ended already, not sure though, maybe someone can confirm.
