Technically there is nothing original anymore.
But what you could do is layer the melody with chords or somer other melody, i.e make a call and response and that should do the job!

I used a Massive performer based lead, the melody is totally unrecognizable now
A Tchaikovsky remix isn't a bad idea...

Yeah if there's a step up, I guess it'd be Rachmaninov, but for the time being, if you're copping Tchaikovsky you could be doing way worse.
How about a dubstep interpretation of the 1812 Overture?

Did a horse burst through your living room or did it start to rain? Just curious.

Happens so much... so annoying when underlying influence creeps too close to the surface and rears the ugly head of plaigarism

I really think everyone does this to some extent. I know what kind of melodies I like to listen to, so why wouldn't I make melodies that I like to listen to. Not only that, we've been raised listening to certain music - so that type will always sound "right" when we are writing. I mean, if I tried to make a gypsy melody... It would sound "wrong" to me, merely because I'm not as comfortable with it as other types of music - like European classical music for example.

Right? I'm only a quarter of the way in, but it's SO interesting! That's crazy how people can get seizures induced from one single tune.

Haha I know this feeling!
I once got out of bed and made the entire melody to Doctor P - Neon or something then realised it.
Wasn't too unhappy though... it's not as if I was chucking away a masterpiece.

Niceeee haha.
Wish I could do melodies like Tchaikovsky! I did a short phrase from an Ocarina of Time song in one of my songs. It was just what I felt like playing over the chord. There's only so many notes and there's patterns that I just really enjoy that go through my head all the time. Unless you go microtonal. But I haven't really heard any microtonal stuff that didn't sound stormy/chaotic/dissonant.
