Should we enforce the How To Make This Sound Thread?

to be honest, people who post in the 'how to make this sound' thread are less likely to get an answer than they are if they post a straight up question in the production subforum.
i think a lot of peoples questions get overlooked in there because obviously alot of people are all posting different questions.
dont know whether anyone else agrees with my opinion but they're just my thoughts on the matter

I think regardless of what approach we take as a community, we need to create an environment which is conducive for learning. Otherwise, we're undermining the whole point of a production forum.

Obbviously this kind of thing will only ever work if people actually spend time helping others and giving proper advice.

And personally, i like to see sound design threads. Its a big part of producing, and if anything i'd like to see more of them. Threads like 'what pc for dubstep' or 'what synth is best' seem to crop up a lot and there isn't a sticky for them.

People who don't want to learn and they just want to know what x makes me do y thing? It gets annoying.

Fair enough, bruhv, but should we let the few bad apples ruin the experience for everyone? Furthermore, that kid never got hostile until he misinterpreted another regular member's sense of humor. True, all of us DSF regulars have a thick skin, but is it fair for us to expect a newcomer to not take something like that personally? Passing judgement on someone you don't know or understand is easy, and I feel there are too many times where a newcomer misconstrues a DSFaddict's post and the entire thread turns into a useless, unproductive flame war which makes our community overall look bad.

You have a good point. Maybe before people register they should have to sign some kind of no-poon agreement or something. Because that guy got real heated real quick. But, at the other end of the spectrum, if i didn't know how most of these people post, i probably would get alot more offended all of the time

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but I think if all of the more experienced, seasoned members gave well written advice, it would help this community grow tenfold. Maybe more. Overall community growth means more hits for the website which means more exposure for everyone that posts here, whether indirectly or directly. In the long run, its a win/win. Or we can continue to actively discourage new members from joining the community by being elitist pricks and contribute to stagnant growth, which in the end will only destroy what a lot of us have come to love and enjoy.

It's good sense, lately this forum is sinking with posts of HOW DO YOU DESIGN YOUR SICK WOBBLES? or HOW DO I MAKE THIS TERRIBLE MID RANGE SOUND? and basic questions that've been answered thousands of time before, op didn't even bother to use the search function. It's all good sense, some how to make that sound threads are okay, some have been answered tons of time before, some are just the op expecting everyone to turn him into skrillex in one hour.

ultimately i think an entire Sound design or how to make this sound subforum should be created. then the production forum could continue as is and when people have specific sound inquiries they can report to the appropriate forum. this would allow people to post specific sound design questions without being overlooked in all of the clutter of being in 1 thread.

i also think there should be a buy/sell subforum, but thats getting off topic.

Ok, so thoughts so far;


1) Lock the threads

2) Put a redirect to the How To Make This Sound thread something like;

Please redirect your comment to the How To Make This Sound thread here - then give the link

3) Make the How To Make This Sound thread sticky

4) For each new How To Make This Sound thread, have the OP containing a list of all previous threads to ease of navigation.

A subforum would be much better, but a thread will do imo.

Why not make a sound design sub-forum rather than keep trying to organize a messy thread/lock threads and re-direct.

Makes complete sense to me, or is there some kind of inability to create new sub-forums? I've been thinking a few additions to the current forums would really sort what's essentially delt with in hard to keep on top of stickies. If the same broad topic keeps being bought up enough to consolidate it all into a sticky, why not just make it an actual forum so people can simply post a thread and be done?

+1 for a subforum! Much better than a massive thread, with everyone answering different posts. Would also be nice if the threads are heavily moderated to keep them on topic. I get sick of threads getting derailed with constant arguing. I.e how to make a certain producers sound then gets filled up with arguing about whether or not people like their music, or consider them a sellout or not real dubstep etc. I couldn't care less if someone likes it or not, that wasn't the purpose of the thread. It would be nice to see a thread that stays constructive, with people posting ideas, sound clips etc.

Also having a sticky with some computer advice might be a good idea. It seems to be a recurring theme - what pc can make music? I've answered loads of them but they keep popping up every few days.
