I built a new budget pc myself recently, maybe my build will help give you some more ideas on the parts you are looking for/willing to sacrifice for lower budget.

The parts I used from previous build:

x2 HDD
620 watt PSU

------------------------------------------------------

Newparts:

(the prices go up and down every 2 weeks)

Mobo/ CPU: i5 2500k 3.3ghz and Entry level Gigabyte board.

http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0354589

bought with

http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0375352

$230 ($50 off)

Memory: 8gb Crucial 1333
http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0382099

$35

Case: Thermaltake Mid-Tower Case
http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0365239

$50 or something

Video Card: Sapphire 6870
http://www.amazon.com/SAPPHIRE-Radeon-6 ... 251&sr=8-1

$158.79

In the end it was around $500. Not too shabby if you ask me.

As far as the SSD, 60gb should be fine since you are using a large hardrive.

Did you already buy the computer? Or are you just planning on buying that computer?

Also could you post a link to the tower?

Ooh lookin' nice^

Decided to just put a new pc together anyway.

It's looking like this (the important bits):

http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/In ... K/736384/?

http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/AS ... O/907730/?

http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Co ... K/892594/?

http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Co ... 2/816004/?

http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/We ... X/150706/?

http://www.alternate.nl/html/product/Co ... 3/987925/?

These are all compatible yes? AND, I'm getting 1 x 8 gigs instead of 2 x 4. From what I've read that tends to run better?

For a lot of people that just surf and facebook, powerful processing can be a waste, but I'm always pressed up against the cpu limit. Plugs just keep getting heavier and heavier (and honestly, better and better). I'm running a quad core 2.66ghz and always max out as I'm working on songs. If you want quality compression and eq on every channel, fugget about it, you need the power. I don't even use IR reverbs.

I'm getting ready to build another one. Like emotionally ready. Shit is such a drag installing everything again. Also am going from 32 bit to 64 and don't really know what that is going to entail in terms of compatibility with all my softs.

I'm also thinking of making everything compatible with a hackintosh build, so I can maybe get a little logic love.

But, if you can, consider quiet shit. Like a quiet case, quiet fans, quiet graphix (hardest one), quiet cpu cooler. My machine used to be totally quiet, like couldn't tell if it was on or off, and honestly, shit is invaluable to me. But it sounds like a pc now. So sad.

Just actually wanted to post (another worthless post in a long history of worthless posts!) that I've never had any problems with home built systems. Just don't get cheap and try and cut corners with budget processors, ram, or motherboards. Also recommend nvidia graphics paired with intel cpu's.

I've decided to do my own built anyway because I didn't wanna cut corners. I was afraid that a prebuilt would just have a decent processor with a bunch of shit on htere. So that's what my latest post was.

I was also wondering whether to go 64 or 32. Renoise is 64 bit compatible, but has a native 32 bit plugin bridge, enabling me to use 32 bit plugins so... going 64 bits would be a nobrainer?

Make sure you get a good brand PSU with enough power for your hardware. Your PSU goes boom, there is a significant chance it'll take something with it.

running 2 sticks would actually give you better performance since it would end up running in dual channel mode.
No point in buying a 750w psu unless you plan on running two high end gpus so a 400w would be more than enough if you dont plan on buying a high end gpu.
i would swap the board out for this one https://www.alternate.nl/html/product/A ... RO/991245/? since it runs the newest intel chipster and better vrm/mofest cooling if you plan to overcock.

If you're talking about using a 64bit OS it is a no brainer since 32bit only limits you to around 4GB of RAM.

Thanks! So glad I posted this. Which power supply would you recommend? I'm planning to run 2 screens eventually, doe. And watch hd movies on them. Though that's probably not a huge deal. I'll run the motherboard's graphics card for a while before I get a decent graphics card.

Does it matter if I get DDR3-1066 or DDR3-1333 type ram?

Hey man, you are going to have to step up your pc building skills. You're going to have to get more specific than that. It's not like you can just go to the store and buy any cpu motherboard and ram, and slap them together. You DO need to do research, check compatibility and what not, but you are beyond capable of that.

==

And a side note, I think I'd rather have a larger single screen than two smaller screens. I've got two 22" ers right now, and it gives me a lot of real estate, but, a lot of aps are being designed for one screen, and it just seems a more elegant solution.

That's what this thread is for? o.O I've already figured out what motherboard is compatible with what cpu and what cpu is compatible with what ram, etc. But I don't know everything so.. I ask questions? o.O

I'd like to run Renoise on one screen and sample libraries/synths in another. I hate when I have to go through too many tabs.

Yeah, thing is these things are so specific, that you'd be better served searching for each individual parts compatibility. This thread is all well and good, and probably better for general ideas, but you'd be better served searching specific parts compatibility with other parts. Was not dissing at all.

Re the 2 screen thing, yeah, flstudio is very well designed to use two monitors, and there is some benefit to using two, but I could just as easily set up the layout to work with one, super giant monitor. :) and other apps like ableton are very specifically and annoyingly designed to work with only one monitor. But I feel you. If I have the cash, but I don't thing that I do, I'd like to get one super huge :)

Well, I almost know everything I need to know. I figured out the RAM thing as well. All I need is a new power supply and I'm set.

I've looked up some bigger screens but... dunno. The money I spend compared to the number of inches I'd get.. doesn't look like it's too worth it.

You could always import this 27 2560x1440 monitor but it may come with 1 or 2 dead pixels unless you get the tested version(depends if you think it's worth the extra cost) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-YAMAKASI- ... 19cec2eb61
But you would also have buy a new gpu since your motherboard is unable to output at that resolution.

Thaanks. I still have an old monitor I'm planning to use for the time being though. So I won't upgrade to a nicer screen and gpu for a while.

Added that powersupply! Thanks a lot :0 All the stuff you've recommended made the pc so much cheaper that I ended up adding a bluray player instead of a dvd one. Awesome.

pricey right? For my last two, I've been "home" level, but on a few of my laptops, I've been "pro" and the Pro really is better. I might have to dish, but it is so damn expensive. Everytime a build a pc, I'l always kind of insulted that I need to buy an os, like I've already done the hardware, the real stuff, why would I pay for shitty software?

8 is coming out too, when? Soon? It is designed for touch. Think about that man. I don't know if you've had a chance to work on music with touch interfaces, but it is pretty great. Having that in my studio is a dream... I've been on the fence for a long time now. Don't want to go 64, want to wait for ivybridge, then want to wait for win 8... just means I'm never going to buy...

Pro offers no more usable features than home and what is missing can be attained by freeware and do a better job, just grab an oem copy of win7 home for around £50.

In what way is 'pro' better than 'home'? I thought it was just additional features that I can do without?

How does touch improve production? :0
